It's sadly everywhere in the media. The company that I worked for did not keep the best people when they made 2/3rd of us redundant. They wanted younger, cheaper and more malleable, more amenable to working ridiculous hours for much less pay.

Absolutely. His writing taught me what film criticism could be. I've followed him and his collaborators ever since: Odie, Emily, the whole gang. Somebody needs to just give him their whole arts and culture section.

Ran into him once and he was conversational, curious and kind in a way not every magazine writer is. Appreciated the conversation. I like to think that implies the writing was not “I have a pre-baked conclusion and I’m on deadline”
