Neither "too oblivious to realize nobody wants to be told why PACs are good actually" and "proactively associating herself with a guy who's doing time" would seem to bode well for her acuity.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Susan Collins explains in detail why her fraudulent donor had to create a shell company in order to send her his illegal payments JACKSON: And that's why Mr. Kao created a shell company to run his corporation, PACs, through to get to Sen. Collins's PAC COLLINS: And that's why he's in jail today

The difference between guys who don't know what time it is and a guy who does is so high-def.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Ossoff on Mike Collins: "This is a congressman who called for executing immigrants by throwing them out of helicopter. He is a fanatic and Trump puppet."

I love the way Ellie explains this and as a person who has very transphobic family in another swing state that's a possible flip, and whose candidate will also likely need to moderate to do it... well, as Ellie puts it, "you work with the electorate you've got".

ellie lockhart (she/they)@eleanor.lockhart.contact

This is not coming from like, some bizarre masochism This is coming from “my own flesh and blood are from this state and they would rather see me dead than literally any other political outcome”. You think I like that? I hate it! But it is the reality!

Do I think they could be made to see the light by a more uncompromising and inclusive stance? Do I think Roy Cooper could find a uniquely Cooperish way to make embracing trans people feel like a positive civic goal to them? I do. Am I willing to stake the entire future of the country on it? Nope.

Truth of the matter is for the moment the nonstop trans panic in every press outlet everywhere has accomplished its goal of making transness seem like a invisible air toxin endemic to swing states and it's going to take work to get these people back to charity and goodness.

Absolutely the most important thing Democrats can do to prepare for November is communicate loudly and often that none of this is correct or legal or fair and that they intend holy hellfire about it. "Drain the swamp" is still a winning platform if you look like you mean it.

TMZ is now covering Natalie Harp, reaching normies who don’t care about politics. Why? Because Jon Ossoff just opened his mouth. www.tmz.com/2026/08/18/n...

How can this dude not win when he's willing to talk about his prospective Senate colleagues like he's Macho Man Randy Savage.

Acyn@acyn.bsky.social

El-Sayed: I think that's clearly what's gone wrong with Fetterman. It's clear he probably doesn't spend much time in Pennsylvania. He was campaigning with Bernie Sanders and now wants to renounce him. I'm hoping to get to the U.S. Senate. Maybe we can hash that conversation out in person.

We must bless Ken Jennings and cast a circle of protection. They just don't make 'em like him.

Ken Jennings@kenjennings.bsky.social

I saw yesterday that some right-wing outlets were running stories about me, which I’m used to. But this time I’m going to say something about it, because these were framed to imply that I was aligned with their own transphobia. ⬇️

What the fuck John Dean's on here

John W Dean@johnwdean.bsky.social

Vance dismisses Watergate scandal, says ‘deep state’ went after Nixon - The Washington Post. Vance seems remarkably ignorant of history. Republicans ended Nixon’s presidency and they have never before been called the “deep state.”

"You're being manipulated by two teams, and you have to pick a team." I have loved the Carolina Panthers through 7 awful years but if the GOP passed Medicare for All, I'd switch instantly. What you are being "manipulated by" is moral sentiments. It's only uncomfortable because you don't have any.

Anthony L. Fisher@anthonylfisher.bsky.social

Joe Rogan, regretful MAGA dunce, is back saying he's "politically homeless" and seeking a "logical centrist" government.

Don't make fun of my governor. He also saved our transit system by making SEPTA employees wax their moustaches and take paper tickets with an old-timey hole punch.

Governor Josh Shapiro@governor.pa.gov

Letting our kids be kids also means getting back to the basics. That’s why, earlier this year, I signed into law a bipartisan bill that requires cursive handwriting to be taught in Pennsylvania schools.

I'm glad he's pushing back but this by Murphy is weak. If you give them money, they escalate. If they escalate, they may one day try to put boots on the ground, and thousands will be killed. The way to "support the troops" isn't to enable a future ground invasion, it's to send them home.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

TAPPER: You know that if you vote against an additional $50 billion of funding for operations in Iran, that vote will be cast as you voting against the troops. CHRIS MURPHY: Come on. The American people do not want this war. If you support the troops, you should be voting against this war.

When I was planning to go to USMA (during Iraq) - JROTC leadership and letter from my Congressman in hand - I fancied myself a little citizen soldier but I thought the job was to make the world safe for democracy. The officer class is a product of dissonance like that. The enlisteds want hazard pay.

Meanwhile everybody in my battalion wanted to move to Ft. Bragg and get a nice house near base. They were poor kids. They were SO poor. I thought I was poor and then I went to my platoon sergeants birthday party and was like "where the fuck am I". I was a fish out of water. The Army was a leg up.

It's a contract you sign when you're a fool and then you roll a die. If the die comes up 1-5, you spend six years in barracks at Heidelberg painting the town red, and if you roll a six, you lose a leg to a roadside bomb in Kandahar. If you refuse to roll, you go to jail.

And I taught little impromptu lectures (cringe) to those future E-3s about like, the fall of the Diem regime in Vietnam. I knew wars could be dirty... rationally. I thought I could do something about that, that me as a l'il 2LT could change the world through, I dunno, good unit cohesion and drill.

Sometimes, to some people. Often out of reflexive or when paid to be biting. And also deeply humane to, and curious about, others. I'd counter the meanness in this essay with "Authority and American Usage" from the same collection perhaps.

A person who did terrible shit. Also a person who thought very deeply about decency and duty to others. It's convenient in cases of "great artist awful person" to gesture at the contradictions, but every so often the awful person is not making art despite their moral quandaries, but about them.

She's probably not even at long odds to win the nomination. She is a tentpole of the party! Intraparty debates often center on what she is doing or saying. Her messaging is careful but bold. After 8 years, she's established: almost 50% of the party has known AOC since they were young voters.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

from the perspective of someone who might want to be president, the best time to run for the white house is now, not later. so if AOC is thinking about it — if the white house is her ambition — then her best bet is to throw her hat in the ring

Like it or not, even non-Dems see AOC as one of the party's faces. And I think that ends up translating to that all-important quantum: attention. Is the Democratic "brand" as bad as Shor thinks? Great, nominate somebody people will not ignore and let them say things that feel fresh.

Girl you don't get out because you committed fraud. You get out because you cut him in on it.

Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes has asked President Donald Trump to release her from prison early, with nearly six years left in her 11-year sentence. Holmes was convicted of defrauding the people who invested in her blood-testing startup.

Goodell needs to fucking fire Brad Allen and his crew tonight, call up Bowles and Canales and tell them to come back in a week and try again. This shit cannot be allowed to stand.

Another Coen comedy, if pitch black compared to Lebowski: A Serious Man. Dr. Strangelove has to be pretty close to the top of this list, too. I am also one of the world's biggest champions of the horribly funny Me and You and Everyone We Know. "Back and forth forever" has set up shop in my head.

Michael@fleerultra.bsky.social

was recently asked my favorite comedies, which is a good question, and I'm not sure the answer. I think Big Lebowski is probably number 1, but after that, idk? Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Best in Show were the other two that came to mind. So let's hear your faves

Usually a few lines of Berryman's Dream Songs knocking around in there, along with the "Grass" stanzas of "Leaves of Grass" and, thanks to rhyme, basically the entirety of Kublai Khan and Ozymandias.

Achilles Micawber@achillesthe2nd.bsky.social

Which lines of poetry live rent-free in your head?

Oh fuck also Sailing to Byzantium, The Waste Land, Dylan Thomas, Howl. "An aged man is but a paltry thing a tattered coat upon a stick, unless soul clap it's hands and sing, and louder sing, for every tatter in its mortal dress."

Replying to @kleinman.bsky.social

I mean look at this point being a Representative is basically a no-show job anyway

Gravity's Rainbow. Jonathan Lethem once put it very well: "For Joyce, history is a nightmare from which we are trying to awake. For Pynchon, history is a nightmare within which we must become lucid dreamers." You can see the great curve in Pynchon and then, after that, you see it everywhere.

Second place to Uwe Johnson's "Anniversaries", an unsung mid-century masterpiece. A fragmentary, memoiristic sequence of reflections by a fictional exile from Pomerania, reflecting on single motherhood and '60s NYC. Another of those "wow, people are truly bottomless" kind of reads.

Third, let's do some poetry, it will always be "Leaves of Grass". Walt Whitman sees something boundless and dynamic in his country and countrymen. All of us are princes, turned loose in Eden by a loving God. He finds us unspeakably sexy and enigmatic. It is a faith you can call upon still today.

@fetterman.senate.gov I'd love to call you privately and let you know what I think you're made of - not much - but since you're such a chickenshit you can't hear from your constituents, I guess I'll just tell you that here in public.

Bill@bill-of-lefts.bsky.social

It is so scummy that Fetterman turned off his voicemail months ago

I really hate to tell you this but based on the Facebook activity of the normies I know, that funeral accomplished exactly what they want it to. Everybody is thinking about the widow. Nobody is thinking about the subtext.

I will never miss a chance to rep for @mikeduncan.bsky.social and the Revolutions podcast. Hundreds up on hundreds of episodes about every major revolt that made our present world, from England to America to France to Haiti to Mexico to Russia. Things will snap into focus, I promise.

Patrick Wyman@patrickwyman.bsky.social

Something the man @mikeduncan.bsky.social will tell you at great and entertaining length is how long it takes for revolts to get off the ground, how often they fail, and how hard it is to predict exactly when they’ll pop off. Slowly and then all at once is a good rule.

The last WGA strike was not only 67% favorable, it was one of the most VISIBLE strike actions of Biden's presidency. By the end, 83% of voters had heard about it, >30% higher than the Starbucks, Amazon or UPS strikes before. If you want people to take notice of something, turn off their shows.

WGA Statement on ABC’s Decision to Pull Jimmy Kimmel Live!

At some point this definitely changed underneath our feet. The first few were nerve-wracking because nobody knew what kind of regime this would be. I spoofed my GPS then turned my phone off. I didn't take photos. But when you've got six million people out the vibe obviously changes.

There was a bunch of posting about how No Kings had terrible opsec because people were posting pictures of themselves at the protest. And like, guys, if you're doing things that are not illegal and 90% of people would not find antisocial, then getting arrested is like, the best protest outcome

Critical support. One person died in Utah and my friend's MAGA neighbor in the Philly burbs left his truck in the street all night with his floodlights on. Every second thread on FB is currently a call for civil war. They want to start shooting because it's the next step to the world they want.

We cannot move forward or escape this nightmare until mainstream figures finally admit that there are many, many people on the right - including some of its most powerful voices - who are openly seeking violence and tyranny and exploit every situation to move it closer.
