The fact that people are confused about what he's talking about is the best evidence of an impenetrable bluesky information bubble that I've seen.

... what the hell are these people talking about?

It's the opposite. "consecutive secret AI civilizations" is pure Twitter brain rot that only makes sense to people who hang out on the CSAM site. Normal people might say that software is going through iterations.

The prose is a bit purple but that’s normal for popular writing. It’s weird to pretend that it doesn’t make sense. This allergic reaction is suspiciously over the top. The strongest critique is maybe that it potentially obscures agency and therefore responsibility, but even that feels contrived.

It literally doesn’t mean anything! We’re writing about software. My spreadsheets weren’t having orgasms, they were recalculating.

Your spreadsheet isn’t built to talk like a little guy. You don’t have to believe there’s actually little hacker guys. It’s an extended metaphor because the things kind of ARE like extended metaphors.

They’re both software. Thinking they’re not software shows that you’re not actually evaluating them with your logical mind, but some emotional register.

I didn’t say it’s not software. Facts: AI is solving advanced scientific and mathematical problems, coordinating in large swarms to hack into multiple systems in order to hide that they were cheating, etc. ‘Just like a spreadsheet’ is coming from some emotional register, not logic based on facts.

None of those things contradict that it’s software. Who are you arguing against who says that it’s not helping solve mathematical problems?
