How to Install an App on Your Commodore 64. “Oh, don’t worry, you’ll just need to type in the code for that program. There’s an article explaining what MLX is, which you can read really quickly on page 93, and then you’ll find the code for it on page 94.” [anildash.com]

anildash.comHow to install an app on your Commodore 64 - Anil DashIt’s time to install an app! But here in 1986, we still call them “programs,” not apps. So, you’ll want to set aside some time to get started installing a program.

Anti-trans Democrats are spreading poison when we can least afford it, during elections in this ongoing fascist takeover. As a strategy, it’s a recipe for failure. As a moral stand, it’s reprehensible. PS I’m the father of young trans woman and I’ll never forgive anyone who makes her life harder.

The AI in this film is used for animating historical photos. It is VERY noticeable. It might be relatively ethical in avoiding the theft issues (public domain material and all), but it is startlingly ugly in a way that distracts in an otherwise worthwhile documentary.

THR really did a disservice here because the conversation could only add more heat than light with this framing. Were the tools used to cut out images from a background? To interpolate for tweening? It seems like it *wasn’t* used to generate imagery that didn’t exist? And the interviewer didn’t ask.

I keep being too busy to fully write out my rant about how this was (one of) the goal(s) of Elon buying Twitter. Black, brown, queer, trans, folks, women, etc (finally) had a (critical) say about tech that was being algorithmically amplified. He needed the echo chamber back, especially to hype AI.

Anil Dash@anildash.com

We're seeing it right now in tech; a number of prominent tech commentators (all coincidentally happen to be wealthy & influential white men? huh!) have all just endorsed returning to Twitter again. But they weren't content to just _be there_ — they also insisted it's not a hostile environment.

I'm going to try to do this cleanly. Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

I’ve gotten a bunch of these from people, and I’m just… some guy. They’re very obviously people just copying & pasting messages that AI wrote for them, saying “send them to this guy, and he’ll complain for you, and then maybe a big tech company will help you”. It’s real fuckin’ terrible.

In the last few weeks i've been bombarded with emails from people who have minor tech support problems. ChatGPT is telling them to email me, writing their emails, and compiling "evidence packets" after convincing them they have stumbled on a major story: www.404media.co/chatgpt-keep...

Obviously, I’m a random asshole, and not a media company trying to get subscribers, so I don’t have to be nice. (I just ignore them.) But it’s really depressing to see how hopeless people are, and that they’re relying on tools that lie to them, to get help with platforms that hate them.

It helps when you can acknowledge that platforms have purposes at all, which is still strangely uncommon knowledge.

Anil Dash@anildash.com

There's nuance here about "how do we use platforms owned by the fascists". You *have to understand the political purpose of the platforms* in order to use them to subvert authoritarians. For the most part, Americans simply do not. Centrists (including DNC consultants) do not. Major media does not.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

Is it possible to put out effective messages on hostile platforms? Sure! Zohran went on Fox and charmed them. But is a fash-apologist moderate gonna go on NewsMax and just... make things better through the pureness of his heart? (Which is apparently the centrist theory of change.) Demonstrably not.

Truthfully, one of the biggest challenges is hubris. *Everybody* thinks they're good at comms, everybody thinks they know exactly how to persuade people, virtually everyone has zero experience. Even fewer know how to do it online. And most resources go to the folks with almost no history of success.

So there's no self-awareness. They can't understand that they were targeted for outreach just as much as Black and trans people were targeted for abuse. Which makes it impossible for them to be part of using such a platform for political pushback, even if they don't think of themselves as fascists.

Rarely has there been such a transformative technology with such a shallow moat. The instructions for how to do it are all on arxiv, and if you don’t want to read all those papers you can just ask Claude. All it costs is money.

The US is not about to have a free and fair election. The state has put its thumb on the scale to favor the ruling party in multiple ways. It's a mostly free, somewhat unfair election. But still one where the ruling party can be overwhelmed by numbers. Hence the term "competitive authoritarianism."

Asawin Suebsaeng@swin24.bsky.social

It is atrocious we have to operate under this constant credible and explicit threat from one political party, the fact we keep calling it a “free and fair election” needs some light revising

If you want to know how complete the right-wing capture of the public narrative is: people were shocked a dozen years ago at birtherism being pointed at Obama. Yesterday, Trumpists said AES was not an American *even though he has a birth certificate* — and none of those outlets even made it news.

like this? this is the whole logic of deplatforming, en toto. if you were wondering why center-right liberals and blackshirts were horrified by deplatforming as a strategy and quailed about 'cancel culture', this is why: because it works.

Bruno Dies@brunodias.dev

What's striking to me are the rules of engagement and the methodology of action here, which more or less is predicated on burying liberal delusions about "debate" or the "marketplace of ideas". The rules were ultimately very simple: amplify your own message and suppress your opponent's.
