I think it's important to triage failed predictions and I was wrong about this one. It looks like it's more organizational dysfunction and neglect than the "embrace, extend, extinguish" I was told to be worried about but the acquisition did not work out well for GitHub. xcancel.com/FiloSottile/...

yesterday I reported on GitHub employee concerns about reliability and leadership, and then hours later GitHub suffered a catastrophic outage 😬 www.theverge.com/news/918001/...

whether it worked out engineering wise is quite different from whether it worked out for the business and their customers. They’ve continued growing exponentially all that time and there seems to be no viable alternative at scale yet.

Enterprise never made sense. git never needed SaaS, especially if you're not using the rest of the forge. Enterprise doesn't need the social layer, MSFT needs the data Someone should sell a forge in a box , maybe with some sort of private mesh for remote access. Sovereign data is all the rage

The question is "worked out" for whom... Arguably everybody involved made out swimmingly except for, as usual, the *users*. That's the Enshittification Guarantee (TM)

As an Enterprise customer: there _was_ a phase where GitHub post-acquisition actually got better, especially in the "Issues at scale" category. A lot of that was also because it became better to use for complex engineering issues. But the last year is tearing this in and people look for a way out.

i don't think there needs to be a single "viable alternative at scale"; part of the reason why we're in this situation in the first place is because we all collectively decided to use a system designed for storing something in multiple places to put everything in a single place

it seems plausible that this is bad for the business in the long-term. But that's quite different, too, from being bad for /the decision-makers/...

Hard to say. Somehow Microsoft has put out… Microsoft software for the last several decades and it never seems to be bad for them.
