Every conversation about bike lanes is like: "Car crashes kill a huge number of people every day, including pedestrians, cyclists, & car occupants. Good bike infrastructure has been shown to make everyone safer (& doesn't increase congestion)." "But sometimes cyclists break rules & hit people!"

My only problem with bike lanes, at least here in the USA, is HOW they're implemented. 9 times out of 10 something beneficial like bike lanes is hardly followed up with increased funding for public transit and/or increase of frequency. Not everyone CAN or wants to ride a bike to get everywhere.

Obviously it's better if there is also better public transit but even just making good bike infrastructure benefits everyone! Cyclists and non-cyclists alike!

I agree we should do things holistically but I don't think there's ever been a city council in America that has built bike lanes as a status symbol.
