I would dare say journalism actually did fine on this one. Without even breaking a sweat. Not that it was hard, getting smacked in the face with the evidence that should end careers of top officials... The big difference is that Nixon had shame and character. Not the best character. It is far worse: Nixon was dealing with secrets that embarrassed him. What we now know is that the execution of a military operation was exposed to the open internet, and the views of internal figures in the administration are now fully reported to the world, a soft (but real) vulnerability exposed.

As Trump is likely to tell Putin all the secrets and Musk is definitely telling the Chinese, the only people in the dark are the American public. When your biggest political donor arranges a secret briefing on US war plans for China and Trump doesn't know about it, most countries call that spying.
