tech-wise, everything has been basically boring and the same ~2009-2025 and now a billion things are all hitting at once. llms, robotics, 3d printing, all this stuff that existed but kinda sucked has all gotten exceptionally powerful faster than you can blink

mostly just that it works. 3d printing as a hobby used to be primarily about printing flimsy little doodads to try and fix your janky printer, and now you can just buy one that works and solves problems for you

what are the main serious use cases? I'm pretty out of the loop on 3d printing

I'm using it for functional parts primarily. Parts for attaching things (e.g. on an IKEA Skadis pegboard), enclosures for projects, replacements for lost parts, stands for devices. Printed a bunch of tiny screen edge protectors for the pebble time 2 yesterday as reportedly the glass is fragile.
