I know a man, around 75 years old, who broke his leg walking in the woods a couple of kilometers from home. Somehow he managed to get home so his wife could drive him to the hospital. When I askd him why he didn't call for help, he said "how would I even explain where I am?". Fair enough.

Nowadays, anyone in Finland 🇫🇮 with a smartphone really should install the free “112” app: it features a big call button and transmits GPS coordinates with the call, so emergency services will know where the caller is.

idk if Finland does it, but just calling them alone will generally transmit your gps location through a side channel if you have a smartphone. (this is on top of other options they have like utilizing cell tower data to at least limit the search)

Finland 🇫🇮 is usually at the forefront of such developments, I think the “112” app, which has been around for a long time, might predate this feature and might have been just meant to implement it before it became standard 🧐

Indeed: 1 year before implementation in android, and 3 before ios. Finland (like many many other countries) nowadays does support E112 with AML also, so it'll work without the app also. IMO it's good for people to know that they can call 112 directly without worrying how to describe where they are.

Finland is ahead of the curve on digitalization pretty often, but at least the rest of us have caught up since then when it comes to this :)
