25 years ago today B3ta launched Well, 25 years ago today, we launched the version of the website you are familiar with, we were going for at least three months beforehand, if you check newsletter dates on issue 1. However most b3tans look at the board post date - so happy birthday us. Sort of.

Yes, one day after 9/11. And 9/11 really is part of our story, as it both killed b3ta and saved it. Four of us had been working on getting B3ta ready, at a magazine office, a "special project" that is when a publisher puts together a speculative project might never lead anywhere.

The planes hit the towers and the boss went, this is fucked, no one is going to care about your weird photoshopping kittens website now, the world is ending. You might as well launch and get it over and done with, plus we need to present it to the bigger bosses next week.

But people did care - almost instantly people started showing up on the /board and messing around. There was an appeitite for just messing around even if the world is ending, however, the presentation to the big bosses didn't go well. The fall out from 9/11 was, kill all speculative projects...

The only reason worth having a website is if it sells subscriptions. B3ta was dead before it started, yet we working on it, could feel it had a bit of life in it, people were coming, people were interested. Then a stroke of the kindest bit of corporate luck, the publisher said, it's yours for £1.

So that's why we can say, thank you Bin Laden, you both destroyed and saved B3ta. And here's to another 25 years of photoshopping kittens.
