I'll add this: r/decomps is one of the most toxic communities the past few months. Any posts that raise some issues with how AI has negatively impacted the space turn into excessive derogatory comments that the moderation team do nothing to limit.

Taka@takarikka.github.io

with the sunsetting of decomp.dev, people really need to come to terms with just how much damage vibecoders have done to our community and OSS in general. encounter is a fellow dusklight dev and friend, and seeing people treat him as replaceable in the scene is upsetting.

They don't do this because chicagogamecollector/Video Game Esoterica is a mod and he's enabling it Dude needs to get IP banned from using the internet

but zeether, you cant say that he's CHICAGOGAMECOLLECTOR, he's from CHICAGO! that's doxxing, which makes you bad, which made him sad when people poked fun of him shilling modretro crap what a fall man, i can't believe i ever respected him for his 3DO vids back in the day

r/wonderswan is all but devoured like termites by AI slop translators trying to translate every JP only game on the system including stuff that cannot be MTL'd like Detective Conan, Inuyasha, Digimon, etc they also stole the SNES Romancing Saga script (days after the TLer passed) for a WS slop TL

When the post is pro-AI and gets a few critique comments, the mods lock the post instantly. This is mostly upsetting because those who get flamed for saying something negative about AI are the people who have done the most for the Recomp/Decomp scene. Absolutely zero respect from the members.

It is genuinely depressing how quickly and intensely the retro gaming community embraced AI slop. 9 out of 10 times when I get those awful AI thumbnails (you know the ones) on my Youtube feed, it's some retro gaming channel, then you go on reddit and it's what you're all talking about here.

retro gaming has long felt, in a mainstream sense, about maximizing consumption. it feels like a natural consequence of building rapport on game library sizes, ROM counts, and platforms supported; whatever makes the number go higher. also people offloading thinking to agents have more time to waste

going by what the profiles of users who defend AIs tend to look like I think a lot of community members who embrace AI slops are in fact not community members

There's something fucked with dev subreddit moderation these days. So many subreddits have mods that will silently lock posts showing too much anti ai sentiments, delete posts and ban users without explanations, some mods are outright lying (the /r/gamedev pro AI mod saying that ai boosters are a

conspiracy theory in response to a thread that was full of verifiable ones), and even having ties to AI companies (that same mod working at companies that provide AI services) god I can't wait for the bubble to pop

Considering VGE (the guy who covers all this slop on youtube and even deliberately sabotages projects) is one of the moderators, that behavior is encouraged

Sabotaged by deliberately confusing "decomp" and "pc port" and conveniently leaving out when something is vibecoded even when that information is unavoidable, as well as deleting any comments by ACTUAL coders.
