Watch BART crews install this new diamond junction in a weekend. This was part of a larger effort to replace a vital interlocking between Union City and Fremont stations that was nearing the end of its lifespan.

An interlocking is the fail-safe system that allows trains to safely move from one track to another. It’s a key piece of railroad infrastructure, and replacing it will help keep service safe and reliable for years to come.

BART continues to invest in trackside upgrades, track replacement, and modern train control technology to make the system even more resilient.

During FY26, BART completed 98 miles of track grinding and surfacing, added three new substations and four portable substations, increasing power capacity from Colma to Downtown Oakland by 30%, upgraded eight stations with new LED lighting, and completed three station glow-ups.
