Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵 Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...

As a “fresher” MSc student at 54, I think Gen AI has genuinely cost me more time than it has saved. I now only use Google Scholar, Grammarly, Zotero and NotebookLM, the latter being to help summarise and test understanding. The proposed Gemini integration scares me, and I want no part of it!

Grammarly also scares me. In my experience it introduces nearly as many errors as it finds, and it flattens everyone's writing--besides which it keeps getting subject-verb agreement wrong.

Frankly, Grammarly is an essential part of my everyday life, and I couldn't get by without it - I have two neurospicy kids, and whilst I haven't been diagnosed, they didn't get it from their mum!

I wonder how people like you got by before the advent of Grammarly.

People thought we were lazy and/or thick, as several teachers in the 70s and 80s put it.
