I’ve been using Safari full time for a week. I’m not switching back. Here’s my experience so far 🧵

I find myself switching back and forth between Safari and Arc still. It's hard to give up the renameable vertical tabs, but their recent hard pivots into AI leave is ehh... not something I care about

Definitely on my watchlist! But lack of extensions is a no go for me. Need apple passwords at the very least. Plus… not sure about a paid browser. IM fine paying, but it feels awkward to recommend to others when it’s $60 for life

Yeah for sure! That being said.. I'm also aware that building software costs a lot of time and I'd rather shoot an individual a couple dollars for something cool than having a company with T&Cs in the thousands of pages make a load of $ by gathering my data and targeting advertising 😬😬😬

i’m working on making extensions happen, it’s been a massive hurdle for people to switch over as for the price, we’re not ramen profitable yet so we really can’t do any better at the moment…

Fwiw I personally don't think the price is wrong. $20 is (sadly) the price of a good cocktail here in NYC now so how one would complain about paying that for a piece of software they use hours a day is hard to grasp. That being said, you're "competing" in a market where "Free" is commonly...

When my wife tells me that a site isn't working properly I remind her to try Chrome and it fixes her issues without fail. The fact that you need a Mac to test Safari means it often goes untested.

Sorry I’m a shill for Arc now and nothing can change me 😩 Except for Zen which adopts similar philosophy for tabs but is based on Firefox, which makes it close contender whose development I’m keeping an eye on.

I've tried several browsers including Arc, which felt very pretentious first round project, Zen,Vivaldi. You were right; Safari is what we were looking for. Now I just need to figure out how to set my Google Meets to open in my work profile instead of my personal profile.

I’ve been trying out vivaldi.com which is ticking a lot of boxes right now. So many customisation options. I have been simplifying my knowledge stack with Apple Notes / Reminders so maybe Safari is the next natural step 🤔

vivaldi.comVivaldi Browser | Powerful, Personal and Private web browserIt’s a web browser. But fun. It comes with a bunch of clever features built-in. It’s super flexible and does not track you. Get the Vivaldi browser for desktop, mobile, and your car!

Nice. Curious about your Apple Notes stack. What do you use the app for? And how do you find notes later (if you find yourself searching?)

App ideas, quick things I jot down when on phone like appts (which I then add to calendar), diagrams using Apple Pencil on iPad, AI Prompts and with latest iOS update I can now record phone calls and save to notes. Anything that requires a bit more of a system ends up in Notion.

First, I love compact mode. Vertical space is king on laptops, and this navbar feels way more open. Plus, the smart use of theme color makes the page blend into the UI nicely 👍

Performance: Anecdotally, I’ve found Safari is smoother rendering HTML and CSS, while Chrome excels with JS-heavy tasks. Makes Safari the king for content reading.

this is because they prioritise the user not the developer, they focus on implementing new APIs properly rather than rushing (meaning we get things like Service Worker late, but implemented in a way that's better for users and security)

Oh that must be why they don't plan on implementing webusb/webserial. Great for users to have to switch browsers to use things like the meshtastic webflasher. They love that.

Features: Tab groups and reader mode are here, which is all I really need. Plus, integration with the new MacOS Passwords app is *chef’s kiss.* Cancelled my 1Password subscription.

Dev tools: I was warned that I’d miss Chrome devtools. The lack of extensions like React is a crime. Still, the essentials are here: CSS grid lines, quick select with cmd + shift + C, good storage and network tabs. It also feels less cluttered.

Nice! I was this 🤏 close to make the switch however… I’m missing in safari a few extensions that I heavily heavily use: vimium (vimari is ok but not there), web search navigator, and enhanced YouTube, and Bitwarden (passwords is fine but not there too)

Was thinking about switching but a friend mentioned issues with google meet. And also having a primary browser means I am opening devtools in many random scenerios for whatever random reason. But didn't get used to the devtools yet. Maybe I will use it as my personal browser and other for work

I have to had Chrome installed for some in-house sites that do not play the standards game. Otherwise 99% Safari, and done so since Safari came out.

I also really like the performance tooling that Safari offers. It is so much more opinionated and information scares than the chrome performance tooling. This gives a clearer direction where to optimize for and is easier to get started with.

❤️ Safari, my default for a few years now. It just feels better for browsing and working in productivity apps. However, Chrome is unbeaten as being an integral part of my dev environment.

I want to make the move but I got so used to the tab management in Arc that the friction is too high. Still trying though.
