It's less active memorization and more muscle memory, just like most people who drive would have difficulty verbally telling you every step of what they do to drive to work in their car, but can actually do those things no problem.

I know this sounds stupid and obvious but: most long combos are just short combos that combo together. You don't have to learn Starter, 5BB, 22A, 2C, 236A, jBB, j6BB, j3[C], 5BB, 22C, you can just learn Starter, 5BB, 22A, 2C, 236A and jBB, j6BB, j3[C], and 5BB, 22C. Also makes you more flexible.

out of curiosity, are you quoting a specific combo (and is it french bread)?
