★ FYI — this being Bandcamp Friday, I wanted to mention that in celebration of last week's 20th anniversary of Information Chase 🎂, everything in my Bandcamp discography is still set as pay-what-you-want. 🎊🙌🎉 Thanks to everyone who's ever given my tracks a spin. 🙏 bit-shifter.bandcamp.com

📆 ON THIS DAY in 2006 • 20 years ago! 😮 @8bitpeoples.bsky.social releases Information Chase, 6 mp3s of chiptune powerpop. It's since come out on CD & vinyl, & I've performed its songs to audiences who have loudly sung along, despite there being no words. What could be more heartwarming than that? 🙏

If shameless Game Boy powerpop is your thing, Information Chase is a good place to start. But here at B.S.H.Q. we pride ourselves on a diversity of offerings. For instance —

You're someone who likes innocent, yet scrappy tunes, but also likes weird, noisy, beat-driven soundchip experiments. "Where can I turn," I hear you say. Why, my debut album, the regrettably-titled Life’s A Bit Shifter, of course. Here, try “March Of The Nucleotides (mRNA Mix).”

Or perhaps you prefer expansive, moody, even disagreeable music, at turns melancholy and furious, all improbably performed on a child's toy & lent a thunderous sheen by audio warlock @lukechaos.bsky.social . We've got you covered — the 2018 album Closed System Blues. Give “The New Normal” a spin.

Or maybe you're not sure quite what you want — and that's OK! We offer a grab-bag cross-section of Bit Shifter material, in the form of Maladaptive Strategies Vol. 1, which boasts tuneful innocence, abstract beats, and indulgent covers. Case in point: Kraftwerk’s “Antenna,” Game Boy style.

“What I want,” you say, ”is music that’s dancefloor-friendly, but sounds like a pissed-off R2-D2.” Boy, you are not going to believe this. Maladaptive Strategies Vol. 2's abstract dance music once prompted a showgoer to remark "I didn't know Game Boys could sound like that!" Try ”Science City Zero.”
