i also think deltarune interrogates gender in an extremely interesting way (the female characters are strongly protagonized and dynamic as active agents while also being constrained by expectations placed upon them, and kris and ralsei struggle against discomfort with Manhood imposed upon them) but

Touching on this is a big part of what I love about Ralsei being sort of a slowly healthy growing take on masculinity. He's living a Spartan existence with no thought or care for his own wellbeing, sacrificing the self to "provide" for those he sees as in his care and it's killing him but...

His interactions with Susie especially are shattering that mindset, making it clear he's allowed to be a person, not just a cog in a machine greater than him, he has worth outside of being useful and productive, he's allowed to want and dream and evolve as a person...

And that resonates heavily with my experience as a man. The societal pressure to be the stoic producer. Worth = job. Worth = usefulness. The only status that matters is the display of wealth since that means you're a good worker.

Ralsei is a breath of fresh air. A male character embracing the cute and the whimsy and learning to be his own person with the assistance of a strong female influence in his life. She's the warrior saving a prince from himself and I think that's beautiful.

this is such a good read!! the way deltarune handles femininity as actual agency vs masculinity as this hollow imposed role... nobody talks about this enough. ralsei especially hits different when you frame it that way

Well people do get very mad if you discuss the way manhood is imposed on Kris and ralsei and what that means for them re: transfemininity, and people rather talk about men they can ship they Susie and Noelle. Fandom is simply too (trans)misogynistic for such conversations to happen.

I’m writing about this right now for a class, mainly juxtaposing a trans reading of Ralsei with the ret of Toby’s queer representation, to kinda go like “hey this gives Toby the opportunity to explore gender performance in this way!” But there’s so so so much more to talk about

One of the other things I’m not writing for this but wish I was is about Kris’s and Susie’s relationship to humanity and monsterhood is also an important example of a social relation marking the body in a similar way to gender

it's very good that dess as symbol of the helpless victim lost girl is juxtaposed against dess the spiky punk sibling against (implied) dess the puppeted corpse roaring knight and invoker of the apocalypse. deltarune is so filled with gender and womanhood and manhood

the most unique and idk if intentional thing deltarune does to me is that fitting into manhood is associated with a kind of psychological castration that results in an absence of being. gaster fell, asgore failed, tenna failed, spamton fell

the most important male character in our narrative thus far is ralsei who is directly connected to femininity as part of his mode of agency but we also see to live a completely hollow and empty life with no sense of being except being beholden to being the prince of the prophecy
