Why the need to say that it was ‘described as a “mass grave”’ rather than just describing it as what it was… a mass grave.

Because the person writing this wasn't there so they are relying on the quotes from the people whom were. Quite important to make it clear what the source of those words is and that it isn't editorialising.

No one feels the need to have the word “horrific” quoted when talked about October 7. These editorial decisions are in line with the usual biased and craven coverage of Israeli war crimes.
