After six and a half years of not having benches, Metrolinx has finally installed benches on the West Toronto Railpath this morning. I nearly sat down and wept.

We stopped caring about benches and seating as public infrastructure during the pandemic. And honestly, it was a good excuse for municipalities to save on maintenance costs. But seating matters. It’s not only a place of rest and repose. It’s a place where you can get a different view on life.

I feel you! In the Copenhagen region, there are hardly benches anywhere. If you need to spend a lot of time the cheapest way to sit is alas in a cafe. Vienna has a fair few benches in the centre and created a warm atmosphere with people sitting and talking there.
