TIL Rube Goldberg told his kids to change their surnames and one picked George and so the other, already named George, also adopted it to keep the family together, ending up as George George. I now believe Luigi Mario and Mario Mario came to be under the exact same circumstances.

So... logically speaking... they were originally Mario and Luigi Goldberg? Glad we sorted that out. I still think "It's a me - Mario" is just the first half of the quote. The full quote is "It's a me - Mario. James Mario."

Maybe he also wanted keep a sense of family cohesion and was fully expecting George to choose the name Thomas as his last name, making them Thomas George and George Thomas, but then George fucked it up.
