I think I’m finally starting to get Rust. Managed to get my standard get-to-know-a-language app running in it. A threaded prime number calculator. It’s taken me the best part of a few days though. The app covers all the basics: functions, classes, passing by reference, lists and threading.

After recounting this to a colleague. Them: “What is Rust used for then?” Me: “Mainly annoying programmers” Was beginning to think Rust was some kind of elaborate prank by the Elders of the Internet.

I've now bothered googling why people use it. Something something forces people not to be sloppy. OK, sounds fine, uggh, full of curly brackets, give me Python back.

Its biggest problem, from what I've heard of folks who tried to do say gamedev with it and then abandoned it, is that it is very hard to tinker with app architecture; you either have to crowbar the new into the old, or take it down to foundations and rework the whole thing

It's the revenge of my *very specific branch* of turn of the century academia. My question has always been "yeah, OK, I can use this, but I was a grad student adjacent to all the theory behind it; can ordinary people use it? So if you ask *me,* it's beating the odds.
