Hahaha! Indeed. I think it's because when they were built, they were not added onto any maps. There used to be one in the village where I was brought up. The locals knew what it was and where it was though, so not exactly top secret!

Manchester had its pros and cons, the main con was parking. We were sold on Hack Green because it's a nice drive into the Cheshire countryside, equidistant from Manchester, free parking, and this sign.

I didn't know there was one there. I keep meaning to go to the Secret Bunker near Kelvedon Hatch in Essex, it has a similar sign. You can mix that with a trip on the Epping and Ongar heritage railway which you drive past to get to the bunker.

Excellent. I’ve not been to Jodrell Bank since the 90s. Where I used to live near Cambridge was a few mins from the Lords Bridge observatory station but I was never sure if they allowed visitors.

We went there when my daughter was quite young. It brought back lots of Cold War memories for me (and isn't there a BBC Model B?), but my daughter was completely freaked out and had to wait outside!

Another memory has just sprung to mind. A nearby village was home to the Manchester Regional War Room on the site of what is now the Alexander Hospital in Cheadle. Given I was a child during the cold war, it was a chilling reminder of what-could-be. It was demolished about 20 years ago.

I discovered Hack Green using an old OS map that *didn't* show it! I was looking for obvious Roman roads, and found one that had an infeasibly empty triangle of land next to it. Just didn't match the texture of the rest of the map. So I went to see both... Whaddyno! A secret bunker!

We ended up there because the chap that ran it (think his name was Ben Butler) was the only one that could properly explain the then-new technology ADSL to us. Nearly everyone else misinformed us, like “you have to keep it alive by pinging otherwise it’ll disconnect” kind of thing.
