I saw advice to buy extra cans of food when you’re at the grocery store to donate to the food bank. I want to politely nudge you to give the money directly to food banks (or to mutual aid groups if you know of any). We can usually stretch a dollar farther than a dollar’s worth of canned goods

Even when a group is asking for specific event donations (usually Thanksgiving is the one I'm used to seeing), donated cash lets them fill in the gaps when it comes time to make complete kits. And there's always other expenses. Being in a church trying to keep a pantry open in 2008 was eye-opening.

Yup. Currently planning a community Easter egg hunt, and we have been doing an annual group trip to the water park in the summer. Shit adds up quickly

2009 church meeting: 'Tier 1 is the absolute minimum operating expenses. Tier 2, the expected extras for running a church. Everything else incl the food bank is Tier 3. The money is going to run out in Tier 2.' So many food bank specific fundraisers to get money that had to go there in the budget.
