For the record, due to the unexpected permanent closure of where we intended to have dinner that night? I got engaged in a Cheesecake Factory. That insult was at least twice as good as the chocolate cake we accidentally fumbled the waiter's pen into Because Nerves. And that was not bad cake.

When a nobleman came in to the tavern and put a note on the board, the monster hunters went to check it out. Laughter erupted. "A gazebo? Quick, someone get Eric!" Then the bounty caught their attention. "That's a lot of gold. Why?" "This gazebo," the nobleman said, "was made by Baba Yaga."

In college, I spent a lot of time around someone who BARELY missed getting US citizenship with her parents and the rest of their children. Because we delay immigration paperwork like that. She remembered where she was born but everything formative was here.

This week is just reminding me why I believe the nature of that cutoff should change. Because not even the US has the paperwork trail the US expects. Because we are notorious for dragging our citizenship process out even in the best case. Because accepting US citizenship means the IRS is forever.

It's as stupid a situation as those foreign adoptees who get into trouble for believing adoptive parents who said they were naturalized. And I'm sure if the representative ever had a thought in her mind the birthdate was wrong, someone would have stepped forward about a college rant over it by now.

Ballots in the dropbox last night, everyone in the household confirmed accepted at the noonish site update. There are many bad things the Internet has led to, having the entire early voting period to fix a rejection is not one of them. (I still don't know if my Nov 2004 GA absentee counted!)

Esme Weatherwax the year before the pandemic, hanging out with Quoth and You and some Take One treat buckets outside my apartment. We had a LOT of immigrant little kids in the complex then, and their faces would just light up because American Halloween and witch hat.

My Teacher Is An Alien has enough natural cliffhangers and a lot of scenes that would have to be expanded to make any sense on screen. BUT there's no way you could do My Teacher Flunked The Planet justice with a kid-friendly rating so no one could take it up knowing the book series was impossible.

I am now wondering if there are *any* children’s books you could get an excellent 10 hour series out of

Our ballots got here, so at least in some parts of the Boston area delivery for ballots going to voters has not been screwed with and is running remarkably fast. Earliest mail date was Oct 1, and I had confirmed that night on the MA Sec Of State's website that mine had entered the USPS system.

We will be educating ourselves on (HOW MANY!?) ballot initiatives before filling them out and dropping them off at our convenient local early voting location, which is a municipal building that puts the drop box within the full protection of whatever outside security went up after 9/11.

We will be making sure they were accepted before counting our election season as over. (Fellow MA voters: if you have requested a mail-in ballot, in-person only closes to you once it's accepted and you do not need to have it with you to do so. Check a day or two after drop off, it's an easy fix!)

The series that got me through the health stuff in late spring early summer? Took me from wanting someone to get Humiliation Conga treatment at the end of Book 1 to Wait Nope They've Had Enough within the first chapter or two of Book 2. Never underestimate the power of a good POV character shift.

Truly, romance authors' ability to take a previous book's antagonist and successfully spin them into a love interest worthy of their own HEA is UNPARALLELED

I would have way too much fun with the fact reality is, I can frame my motivations for a lot of my stances on things in ways extremely racist religious conservatives will nod along to right up until my conclusion is revealed.

Like how I'm very concerned about safe access to healthcare as a cis woman... and that means I'm raging at the fact I have been sexually assaulted when female medical staff made assumptions based on themselves but I'm still assumed to see other women as safe and preferable instead of dangerous.

So I'd just have to hide the point where the logic makes the turn. Don't know how well I'd do at it, but the magic of print media is no one consuming at home has to know.

Like how I'm very concerned about how immigration policy affects my access to healthcare... which I access via a local predominantly Haitian taxi service that is clean and well-driven and I don't want the nice men who helped me during two cancer scares in two years to have to flee or worse.

Like how I'm very concerned about how the government may react to me being descended from Virginian planters... and from experience that means making sure EVERYONE with my last name gets equal rights. (Which I'm sure anyone attempting to look good to Current Admin would just love until the turn.)

Rabies is 100% fatal if untreated. Please help spread the word about the exposure at the Farm Adventures mobile petting zoo in North Carolina. The vaccine is incredibly effective and will save your life. Also…. Rabies at a petting zoo!?!? www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

'Mommy, why are you calling it a parade if there aren't any floats?' Me at over 40: still thinks the inauguration day parade the day Reagan stopped being president deserved floats, fireworks, a couple of county high school marching bands, the works. And then at the end of the year, Berlin Wall.

In hindsight, it's actually kind of scary how adorably tiny I was when I learned the theory of how to hold a sledgehammer without hurting yourself by observation, because of course those videos were all over the news and my parents were glued to the evening news every night.

Pokopia. Player can't die, I own any home I want via the cunning use of flags, and even though it's a post-apocalyptic environment somehow my current problem is a turtle who lives next to a waterfall, a hot springs, a fountain plaza, & a fountain IN the hot springs but still wants more humidity.

"There is no medical reason to eat sugar" and because I had a family history of Type II he forced me to agree with him before he'd hand over the ER discharge paperwork. I had eaten 8fl oz of full-sugar Jell-O before coming in, thinking the might-be-appendix pain was from not eating the day before.

A question from Reddit that I'll answer here: "What's the most unhinged thing a doctor has said to you with a straight face?"

I had barely eaten for weeks, but I was still 5lbs over BMI 'overweight' so time to disbelieve the patient & discourage caloric intake. Also that hospital system inputs all blood sugar as fasting, so being barely over range under two hours after eating that was OMG HIGH BLOOD SUGAR EAT LESS.

I'm currently waiting on test results from said hospital and really hoping the situation is nothing because explaining 'you know how you worry about patients who only eat Jell-O? I'm not allowed to even eat Jell-O here' the first time I'm ever hospitalized is going to be wild for all involved.

When I was a freshman in high school, a new store opened near my house. Mom was there on opening day during the Beanie Baby frenzy and completely on impulse bought me a purple bear without processing what she had. As of this Christmas, Princess will have been my adventure companion for 28 years.

unseal your cards, unseal your comics, take things out of the fucking box. it's all just cardboard and plastic. fuck the resale market

Each new store selling Beanie Babies then got a single box of the later runs, so while she was never going to be worth as much as an original most of her siblings are probably sealed up. Instead she got to ride a plane, get tucked in at sleepovers, faithfully watch over college all-nighters, etc.

I really wish some of them would also be aimed explicitly at adults, though. Matrix-style planners would work great with my brain, but the companies that print them assume the user is too young for weekend responsibilities including religious (even when made for high schoolers, who aren't).

Structured Success@structuredsuccess.ca

It's not childish to adapt child-focused ADHD strategies to work for you as an adult. Visual schedules, sticker charts, token economies, and other strategies get talked about as if they are only for kids, when they could help so many adults as well

And by that, I mean the 'block a subject' type, not the quadrants. The most commonly available ones assume no one who needs a planner has anything important going on the entire month of July and give one single block each for Saturday and Sunday.

A comment someone made tonight reminded me that in the church I grew up in, it is currently 5 months until the next guaranteed mention Mary even existed at all and 6 months since the last one. (The crucifixion passage with her in John didn't really get used.)

Cutting that song doesn't mean that much for you, and the lyrics have a few issues for you. But the day before I left for the TEC, it was over half of anything of her I didn't fight to scrape together myself. It was the only thing about her my grandmother had, and we searched so hard for that CD.

So yeah, scheduled annual Christmas fight when the RCC tries to take Mary away from the more distant Protestants and wonders why there's a fight to keep her. And my memories of summers when she didn't functionally exist (even the years in college I warmed an RCC pew, nothing during school breaks).

Catholics, this is why other Christians suddenly go feral when you propose taking Mary Did You Know away. When I was little? Her name was in Little Drummer Boy and she existed in Silent Night. Art of her was kids books. The Magnificat, skimmed by One Year Bible marathoners. And then MDYK came out.

I find any 'support our troops' twist to July 4th ironic because it was the one day of the year my WW2 draftee grandfather's service was disrespected by even his wife. He got out with exactly ONE lasting traumatic symptom due to a food supply line collapse: hot dog aversion. 'But they're $1 today!'

Someday I would like someone to do a study on the selective deafness of doctors who on hearing a patient fears not being given available personally preferred treatment options that are medically valid if they go against population norms comfortingly offers reassurance the norms shall be upheld.

A decade ago, I basically dropped off the Internet other than what was needed for wedding planning. I went to bed very late in the night crying bc I'd lost two people I should have known but never had the chance to meet to known or presumed homophobic violence outside gay bars.

I still don't have the online support community I had when I was closeted in the mountains, and it was destroyed by a bunch of people with rainbow icons telling me I couldn't understand pain I was BORN INTO. Right around 10 years after my godbrother went missing after walking out of a gay bar.

Heck, after posting this I may have to step back again. So much of the immediate aftermath, I don't remember. I held myself together enough for wedding prep, cheered up enough I was happy on the day, but the trauma is still there.

Spouse had been at Boston Pride that afternoon. I woke up to being told he should have been killed for going and I should have been killed for being too close to a pride parade. Because being asexual in and of itself was a threat of violence. One teen had said something clueless while we slept.

Now that I've made a fool of myself mistaking Yep for Yolen. Devil's Arithmetic was the Holocaust book technically no one made me read but if I hadn't already on my own before I hit Night as an assignment in 8th grade I don't think I would have gotten as much from it.

Dad made me keep Owl Moon. That and Rylant's When I Was Young In The Mountains were the best he had to offer when I was a little kid on what living up against nature felt like when he was a little kid.

It's almost 90° degrees. The AC meters are officially not running so the system is definitely down. We are barely keeping inside temps even with outside. I just had to check The Weather Channel's temp map to make sure I was in the same reality as the It's Nice In MA chorus in World Cup threads.

The chorus needs to understand something. There is only one place in the ENTIRE FREAKING COMMONWEALTH that is not in the 80s and 90s right now. The stadium FIFA is using? IT'S NOT ON CAPE COD WITH YOU. It's been relocated to the outskirts of Hell itself with the rest of the state for the week.
