I'm sad that music is such a minimal part of movies now. Movie music gave the movies a way to bleed into the rest of life, and become permanent parts of culture. The movie could be present and important to you even while you weren't immediately watching it.

even pop music soundtracks - Better Off Dead, Streets of Fire, like, Shrek had really iconic soundtracks that were mixtapes of a dozen popular songs you don't really get that anymore

i had occasion to watch shrek recently for the first time and that was a weird kind of antiquated thing where they just constantly did musical numbers, sort of like watching the marx brothers and them interleaving dance sequences into the plot like that was normal somehow

i wonder what future media will look back on in the same way, for us. maybe the long not yet unbundled 'plot development' and 'staging' which isn't paid for in max dopamine-per-saccade-second or something

and that was just how movies were! Better Off Dead is a regular live action movie that just straight up has a claymation hamburger dance scene in the middle of it that is never referenced again Breakfast Club, Bill and Ted, Blues Brothers, The Chipmunks, Ferris Bueller, Weird Science...

I've really come around on musicals from when I was younger I used to kinda think they were terrible & cringe & unimmersive But now I think, done right, musical numbers really do enhance the film
