man if this isn't the most interesting character study I feel like I could make a whole docudrama about it, like a Zero Charisma or a Tiger King -- everyone is wrong in a different unique way, and then they all collide in the middle over something that never really mattered

i wanted to be sympathetic to someone watching their hobby/income disappear to ai but good lord the vibes here are rancid for *everyone* rec98.nmlgc.net/blog/2026-10...

I am sympathetic in the broad sense to the challenge of open source changing from personal stewardship to being defensive all of my stuff is "open source" which is a word that means you can read the repo - I've had like ten PRs in all this time, from friends, with good intentions, etc. that's easy!

and so you have these passionate archetypes who are quietly chugging along on something and suddenly they have 500 monkeys in their kitchen and that's a very different management verb and skillset from whatever code they were whittling before I totally see how that sucks, and is changing so fast

it's tricky! there's a really fine line between project stewardship and personal fiefdom, and opinionated software (namely: opinionated software development) has a looong history of being on both sides of that line the ideal amount of fiefdomness is not even zero! direction includes protection

then you get into funding and income, and like, money is a whole other psychology and topic and skillset on its own, so now the surface area of people and personalities clashing over those motivations add even more chaos gremlins I dunno, I don't really have a point. I just find it so fascinating
