Supporting re-releases matters, even if you can in theory "play on emulator" or however you find a way to experience a particular game through an alternative. Sure downloading for free won't hurt the big corporations but it will hurt any chances of future official re-releases from ever happening.

Not everyone has the tech literacy of acquiring software from "in the know" sources and running them. There are a lot of people (mainly casuals) who would rather spend money to experience something via an official release. Don't want to pay for it though? Then continue playing in the seven seas.
