Multiple times I've had people yell at me "well what is the ALTERNATIVE that we should give people who are using chatGPT???" and like, idk, dude! I don't know how to tell people they should have values or engage in critical thinking.

It's just a dead end discussion. If we're going to frame it in these terms than yeah let's just lay our heads down on the train tracks because you can't imagine an escape from a society dictated by consumers wanting convenience and capital giving it to them, however twisted.

Ultimately people making this argument just come off as arguing in bad faith; it just reads as an attempt to extricate some kind of indulgence or exemption for their own use of an LLM.

Because of course there is no 'alternative'. I mean, there is, of course; the alternative is thinking, research, talking to other human beings, doing work, etcetera. But what is meant by an 'alternative' is 'another way to avoid doing those things', and, well, the harm is (partly) in exactly that!

The problem with LLMs is in what they *do.* The convenience itself is poisonous; a lot of the time it's the convenience to blithely accept being wrong.

That's like being asked to provide an alternative to tbe Internet when it first came out & exploded, then changed the world & how we ea operate in it AI is here 4ever. People will use it more & more. It'll get better & better w/ use AI Inventor, Geoffrey Hinton now only advocates for safety for it

Asking to just undo the Internet, undo the television, undo the radio, undo the car, undo the book, etc. is simply impossible. Pandora's box doesn't close. All you can do is regulate and adjust to what comes out of the box. All innovation comes with incomprehensible risk but it will never go away.
