Multiple times I've had people yell at me "well what is the ALTERNATIVE that we should give people who are using chatGPT???" and like, idk, dude! I don't know how to tell people they should have values or engage in critical thinking.

It's just a dead end discussion. If we're going to frame it in these terms than yeah let's just lay our heads down on the train tracks because you can't imagine an escape from a society dictated by consumers wanting convenience and capital giving it to them, however twisted.

Ultimately people making this argument just come off as arguing in bad faith; it just reads as an attempt to extricate some kind of indulgence or exemption for their own use of an LLM.

Because of course there is no 'alternative'. I mean, there is, of course; the alternative is thinking, research, talking to other human beings, doing work, etcetera. But what is meant by an 'alternative' is 'another way to avoid doing those things', and, well, the harm is (partly) in exactly that!

The problem with LLMs is in what they *do.* The convenience itself is poisonous; a lot of the time it's the convenience to blithely accept being wrong.

*Maybe* you can use an LLM regularly with the caution that you only use it for trivial, low-stakes tasks. I'm not particularly convinced that this is a 'safe level of exposure'; it seems inherently harmful to repeatedly expose yourself to a flattery machine designed to mislead you.

But, these 'critical' LLM users will get extremely defensive about it; they'll promise that *their* toy example of how to use these systems is fine, and moreover who are you to argue if you can't provide an 'alternative'. It's just useless.
