for my next newsletter and episode i bought the bestselling laptop on Amazon to try and explain how shitty most people's exposure to tech is. Currently at 30 minutes of menus and updates. I have agreed to three privacy policies and created two new accounts. We live in hell

It's absolutely not The Answer, but I'm so grateful I can use Linux and don't need Photoshop; my next laptop is absolutely going to be sandblasted clean of pre-installed gunk before I pour Ubuntu into it.

I’ve been off in the Linux world for so long I’ve forgotten how bad it is for the normies. I’m not doubting you, but what is the showstopper? Is it just the installation process? Adobe suite and office? Or just force of habit?

most people don't know what booting from a thumbdrive is, what a partition or a distro is, they don't even know you can have something else than windows or apple (or maybe chromeOS) If you open a terminal in public they will burn you at the stake for wizardry

So if the computer comes with a well chosen Linux distribution pre-installed, you think the needle would move? People understand app stores on their phones, which is basically the same thing as a package manager.

I don't know tbh, if we look at smartphones, even microsoft failed to pull up a fight with android and iOS with its windows phone. But who knows ! considered a lot of popular work software suites are now nearly 100% web based, maybe it could happen. But don't you dare make people type commands!

They don't expect a computer to be something you have to or would like to tinker with, they expect it to work right out of its box and they're at least partially right (as much as i like to tinker)
