for my next newsletter and episode i bought the bestselling laptop on Amazon to try and explain how shitty most people's exposure to tech is. Currently at 30 minutes of menus and updates. I have agreed to three privacy policies and created two new accounts. We live in hell

I agreed to this thing from edge. I have no idea what I agreed to! But I agreed to it. Also they just hit you with a OneDrive ad for good measure

Windows has gone so off the rails with dark patterns. MacOS as well but not as bad. Both are buggy as shit. Dealing with incompatible drivers / endless configuration is starting to look like a worthwhile compromise.

Microsoft edge is the worst laptop I've ever had. In the course of two years, I went through five of them. They'd just randomly stop working, completely bricked. No explanation, I felt like I was going crazy

"why don't you do a clean install why don't you do linux what if you replaced this" no no no no no. This is the bestselling laptop on Amazon and I am acting as if I am a normal person. Normal people don't even know what linux is. They think the Penguin is bothersome

I hate the extra work of turning off, deleting, hacking out all the useless annoyances that come with Windows, but Linux is basically the same problem from the other angle! I'd just be doing as much or MORE tedious work to achieve a regular functioning system that I'm close enough to with Windows

Once saw someone on Twitter say "Never recommend Linux to anyone. The people who can use it well already know about it, and the people who don't know about it will get supremely pissed off trying to use it."

Linux is great for anyone with a bit of knowledge about tech. It's also great for those with zero interest in tech. If you have a friend who can set it up for you, it just works. (And I've done that for several people.) It's not so good for the big majority in between.

In 2021 I did a 1k mile road trip in a Mustang Mach-E to show how terrible charging infrastructure is in the US for non-Teslas. The whole time I had people in comments saying “Just use this random crowdsourced app of working stations!” The point was to show what would happen if my mom bought it.

SOOO annoying moving from Windows to Windows. No, I don't want extensions hidden, My bet is that "recent browsing history" means they're sending it back to MS \for advertising\ to help you save data in case of a crash.

My parents swapped out their internet service provider and so it changed their WiFi, at which point their wireless printer went into lockdown and required a full factory reset to work again. I figured it out while visiting for thanksgiving, but this is not how technology should behave.

I had to provide this exact same tech support earlier this year! I have no relevant experience other being younger, less easily intimidated by IT, and more prepared to Google through it. My Dad would have seriously tossed that printer rather than get through it. This shit is infuriating

Here's a bespoke comparison of linux distros and their technical and philosophical differences so you can make an informed choice (note: some of the choices are WRONG WRONG WRONG): 1/∞

Anything prebuilt is hell these days. At least if you DIY, you usually get away with just having to clean up the garbage from the Windows install (and maybe wrestle with whatever janky control center software your motherboard manufacturer has). Not much choice there with laptops, though.

And for weeks and months afterwards it keeps saying "let's finish setting up your PC", mainly because you chose to use Firefox and not Edge. Disregarding Linux for now, does a new Mac do this?

Android is Linux, and MacOS has very similar command line interactions making it basically Linux. Also these days it’s just as easy or easier to use than the bloated “mainstream” operating systems. You’re just being blissful in your ignorance and unwillingness to try something new.

I am done messing with this thing but I think it's fair to assume that hundreds of millions of people experience the computer in a way that is actively harmful

I switched to apple (except for my PC which I rarely use anymore anyway). I’m shocked at the difference in user experience. Canceling my Microsoft subscription and my Google Drive subscription were lowkey nightmares, as were getting things reset because everything wants to use my old phone to ID me.

Y'know, I'm reminded of the many comments I've seen to the effect of "kinda wild how only one generation [Millennials] learned to use computers." But the joke doesn't mention how part of that might be that one generation (Millennials) have ruined them since.

Stop blaming the computer!! From what you've written, it works well. Your beef is with the Operating System and software. I won't say "try Linux" but I use it for the reasons you complain about. Privacy is respected, terms of use are fair, and updates fast and easy. Complaining isn't a solution.

stop trying to tell me about Linux! I have gone 38 years without learning anything other than there's a sickly penguin and a red hat! Normal people do not experience Linux! For shame!

I was seriously relieved when I started listening to your podcast and realized my increasing levels of frustration with modern tech are not because I'm getting older (I'm only 40 for gods's sake!) but because everything is actively getting worse. 🫠

lol I was previously a Linux sys admin for web app dev (for a living), and now an R programmer in an Apple ecosystem, and today my dad clicked on some sketchy link that made his windows laptop go into a security freak out tailspin and I was like “uh dad I don’t know wtf to do except hard reboot?”

the other half of the millions of normal users have a similar but equally nonsense computer setup for work i have one of the ‘better’ ones but the laptop would die if it goes over an hour and a half without getting plugged in

Manufacturers should not be putting insane amounts of bloatware onto their devices. Idk if it’s a cost thing but it’s insane the amount of software that comes installed on Windows machines these days that provides 0 or negative value.

Most people think giving away their personal info is the trade off for functional tech. My parents don't think twice when asked for their email, DOB, gender and phone number. It's disgusting the way the tech industry takes advantage of people that don't know better

Windows is literally unusable with default settings and stock bloatware. And there is no way to get out of this market, you can spend $1500-$2000 on a Thinkpad and it still has it. It’s wild cause the bloatware will literally eat up half the stock ssd and load the processor enough to kill battery

You're right. The median PC setup experience even drives experienced users to alternatives like MacBooks & ChromeBooks if they don't absolutely need a Windows system. Not that they lack dark patterns, but it's not Windows via [insert manufacturer here.]

Linux is like when I would shoot raw photos of my wife and child on vacation and then have to color grade them and export them and it’s like… I just want to see these pictures of my family and share them with my mom and shit. Lemme just shoot jpgs and smile at my goofy baby covered in ice cream!

I literally had to make a boot drive two days ago and it hung on the boot check. apparently Windows' autoplay fucks with the image as it's being written, so I had to reflash the USB all over again. easy/annoying for ME to fix but I imagined my mom trying to deal with it on her and. lmao.

Yeah nah I gave up all of it, normal people should just buy a MacBook. Everything else is trying to emulate a MacBook but without the good parts.

windows requires chainsawing out the bits i don't want, linux requires elaborately constructing a tale of software i would like to work, as a software engineer i am finding my perfect cave to live in so i can fight all of the murderbots trying to sell me nootropics

As a Linux person, this sort of exercise is very useful to understanding people's experiences...somewhere between user research and sociology. It's shocking just how involved and high-maintenance Windows can be and how vigilant you have to be these days to keep it from changing the deal on you.

My mom's Windows laptop was so fucked with shitware that it was essentially unusable and unrecoverable. So I put Windows in a jail partition and installed Linux. She no longer has the privileges to install shitware and is blown away by how awesome it is. All she needs is a browser anyway.

Actually I respect this a lot for an article. Often something I talk about with others in the tech/gamedev space is exactly this. Looking at what normal people are doing with the product. Not everyone is a power user, and some are barely a user at best. People tend to forget that.

normal people do know if you've introduced them. but they won't have the know-how to burn their own cd or usb to do a clean install

How much worse is this than the early 2000’s when PCs were full of tons of bloatware that would run on startup? When I’d have to dig into settings to not have the computer default to the Compaq media player or RealPlayer when I put in an audio CD?

Welcome to most Windows PCs. Crapware for days. I used to recommended the crapware-free Windows PCs from Microsoft Store but I don’t think they sell them anymore. Surface still best way to buy Windows for this reason.

Sorry - now if you ever want to sue Microsoft or any company that has ever used it’s software you actually have now agreed to settle those disputes in a trial by combat.

Well Joanna you are going to absolutely love how I open up my upcoming newsletter after next week's. This laptop was the bestselling laptop on Amazon when I bought it. I'm using it as an example of how bad most people's tech experience is. To war!

No such thing as a crapware-free Windows PC, when the crapware call is coming from inside the house. Windows can still be good, but it takes a lot of effort to trim away the fat. Pressuring users into their first-party software is a tale as old as Windows, but it didn't used to suck this bad.

every time I log into another school computer, sometimes even if it's the same, I am greeted with the same issue of having to disagree three or four times to separate kinds of data collection by Edge and now just use Firefox Portable again

You are supposed to be getting your 23 year old kid to click through all this garbage then set up your web browser with the four shortcuts you actually use and maybe he or she will finally teach you at Christmas how to organize the vacation photos on your phone.

Oh my God. I volunteer helping seniors with tech. You should actually keep going, and check out the dark patterns written into some of the software they end up using. I've come to the conclusion that many seniors are not bad at tech, they are actively being confused by dark patterns.

”Hi I'm Microsoft and the default location for your saved documents is OneDrive. No, I have no idea how you would access your documents if you found yourself without Internet access, why do you ask?"

My Mini PC gives me a one drive ad about every other time I update. I never have wanted one drive. I will never have one drive. I have iCloud from my phone and can use that. Please stop harassing me and my family for your dumb cloud service Microsoft!

In addition to all this with my two kids’ laptops, I’ve had to go back several times to fully delete and destroy all of the anti-virus apps. Not to mention the general shittiness of Win 11. One laptop has the intermittent freeze bug, the other needed a hard battery reset when it stopped recharging.

I'm locked out of one of my business websites until I open a square account. I can't edit it, change payment, nothing. There's no way I'm getting the square account, so time for a new website with a new host.

This is a solid exercise. I'm curious whether Chromebooks are on normal people's radar at all? They're basically life-support systems for Chrome, and I think have relatively little upsell-and-registration hell? And schools use them, so maybe they have some mindshare?

My wife has had two cheap ones and barely used them. They were just slow enough to pull out and boot up that she was usually better off going to use the desktop or just using her phone. A guy in my D&D group has one just to facilitate discord and foundryVTT and it struggles with that workload.

Hell is when you create a new password, store it safely, follow the link in your email about having opened an account, it asks you to login. You put in the password. "Password incorrect". It's not. I did it just 20 seconds ago. I know my brain is foggy but I copy pasted it too! So many swear words.

I tried running the preinstalled windows setup with my latest notebook, couldn't handle it, had RevOS and Linux installed by the end of the day. It's no wonder normies prefer their phones to PC nowadays, the Windows laptop experience is absolute dogshit

I have to use Windows for work. Windows feels like I've invited a scammer to come live in my home. Would have loved to replace my 11-year-old Mac with something that's not by Apple, but I looked at the options and in the end I ordered a Mac Mini.

My wife is getting her dad a Chromebook for Xmas, we were talking about specs and I said probably the most important thing is just being around when he first starts it up to help him navigate all the logins and "free trial" prompt garbage that comes on new consumer grade laptops now.

took me like 3 years to figure out how to use my apple tv and also have a working dvd player connected to it. A handful of years in, it's already malfunctioning and doesn't wanna turn on sometimes so I'll have to unplug everything and start over. It's so annoying

Mac users don’t, if the onboarding experience is the reference point. Also, Apple’s support is absolutely insanely good even if you don’t have AppleCare. I can have a live screenshare chat with someone about any Apple product in minutes. Blows my mind.

And you just bought the best-selling one. For me, the nightmare starts when I have to compare various features/brands, check reviews on and off site, etc because I can't afford to be wrong.

This is really important. Those of us in tech would take a laptop like that and just wipe the thing before even trying to use it. Most don't have the skill or even the idea that that's a thing. They take the terrible experience as normal.

I weirdly zip through these because I already have all the accounts but like Win11 has gotten so user-unfriendly at this point even if you built your own PC it can be a fight. Like you need the secret console just to finish OOBE if it doesn't automatically detect your wifi.

Which is basically my one thought on the whole "use Linux" thing, I kinda think Microsoft is so over the event horizon that im expecting a lot of moderately techy people who wouldn't have considered Desktop Linux before to start picking it up like chewing their own leg off to escape

I love this exercise but horrified by the result. I haven't purchased a Windows laptop in forever and use mostly Linux. I was pretty cynical about how bad all that would be but it is still an order of magnitude worse. That's just on setup. I can only imagine what it's subjecting them to day to day.

Every one of my computers except my gaming rig runs Linux now, I hate macOS’s design philosophy, and I just can’t deal with how intrusive Microsoft is becoming with win 11

In a much smaller way, the experience of console gaming also sucks now. "Hey I've got 20 free minutes to play something" turns into half an hour of downloading and installing updates, 2FAing into an account or three, finding a cable for a controller patch, etc

Tried to play call of duty this weekend: "please update...350GB of space needed" The series X internal drive is 500gb, including system space. They mashed multiple titles into one hub app and screwed up the experience to be more like Fortnite

My web development students don't even know what files they own are. We have to review file structure every assignment that requires JavaScript or CSS. They live out of their downloads folder like it's a van by the river.

Yeah they can skate by in the beginning, but I started realizing they had no idea where they were saving stuff or what they saved it as when we needed external files and also many needed the demonstration multiple times. I just started incorporating it into every single code demo.

This makes me nuts, especially since they never show the file you need. Office 365 in general is just an awful UX. Like why isn't the one drive file system just the front page?

That's giving me anxiety just looking at it. One of my undergrad professors would instruct us to save our files for statistics on our desktop. I was horrified, but now I understand why because it's the only way they'll be able to find it (or at least I'll be able to find it for them)

OTOH, I taught my father how to create directories based on topic, and he took it very much to heart. He created so many directories and subdirectories based on what he felt was the right structure while saving them, that he (and me) could never ever find the file he wanted when he needed it.

Same. And unfortunately many of my CS students in systems classes struggle with the file system as well. Their mental map of OS functionality is all based on search boxes and point & click, completely avoiding hierarchical organizational structures.

Right. I mean at this point the basics of the OS just need to be part of the curriculum because no one teaches it anymore at the K-12 level. It's not their fault the first few times.

We had to introduce a new first-year module for our CompSci students because there is so much knowledge about computers that we can no longer assume students have.

I'm in the communication department, but I'm curious to ask people from Comp Sci at my school. We do get some comp sci students because we have the only web development course, but the ones I've had so far have it figured out (they are mostly jrs and srs though)

Thank you for putting yourself through this. I do a lot of workflow consulting and tech support for artists, and they are regular people (in tech exposure) with weird and demanding needs (like extra RAM for a given art program). I need to be aware of where we are in hell and you saved me some time.

I bought a tv last year because my computer monitor died, and the cheapest replacement was a tv, and it took me 30 minutes and no small amount of crying to set it up. I'm fairly tech savvy, it was grueling, I wanted to bite someone.

I used the very basic Windows 7 long past its "due date" - even purchased a refurbished Windows 7 desktop to avoid Windows 10 upgrade. In the past year Windows 10 updates and shuts down every Thursday night at 2:30 AM! The purpose seems to be to get me to purchase Windows 365.

I purchased a new laptop a few months ago and its an utter shitshow. If youre invested into the windows ecosystem this godawful experience is unavoidable. Took me several hours before it was all done setting itself up and I could even start moving things over.

I bought a Dell many years ago, it crashed on setup. After that, my entire school district bought us all Dell. Computers and laptops. Let’s just say they had to spend a LOT on techs and the service was slow!

I often have go help patrons at work with computer/phone/laptop issues (despite it not being in my job description) and I knew what I was in for when I bought my new laptop, but WOW was that a LOT of “new account?” “Free trial?” And now I still haven’t fully set it up because I got too overwhelmed 😬

Current frustrations don't fully register with me because I still compare to the old days when updates required a big stack of floppy disks and took half the day. It's better than that, but still not good. FWIW I mostly use a Chromebook, and that just requires signing in to my Google Account to use.

Ed, thank you for this. So often I have friends and cohorts with real problems. Yes I use Linux but I'm a tech guy from way back. Today's Windows systems are terrible and I feel it contributes to the scam problems. The user can't understand, even at a fairly superficial level, so panic

Adding: two intelligent friends both got caught by machine lock ups caused by a virus, and not understanding followed the instructions the scammer sent. Both said the same "I didn't know if was a real problem or not".

I tried to set up an additional account on my email app the other day and ended up down a rabbit hole of unexpected horrors. It used to be so easy. I can’t imagine wanting to learn to use any of this in the state it’s in now.

Hey, 20 years ago they came pre-loaded with all sorts of useless shit that bogged it all down and were a hassle to delete. They still doing that?

With 41yrs in IT part of this is the free to use model apps rely on (Google, Facebook, X) They rely on adverts for income. So they need lots of info about you. T&C’s are complex cos they use this info but then get sued for doing so. I don’t agree with how complex things are but there are reasons.

This is massively trash and it got so bad it drove me away from using Windows 11 on my gaming PC that I built. With a base Microsoft Windows 11 Pro. I'm not suggesting Linux to a regular people. It's gotten so bad it's pissing off power users, WITHOUT ADDED BLOATWARE.

As a former JW and a long time Linux user, I will say that JWs are definitely worse. You can uninstall Linux if you don't like it. If you uninstall JWs, you risk losing your family and friends.

It's absolutely not The Answer, but I'm so grateful I can use Linux and don't need Photoshop; my next laptop is absolutely going to be sandblasted clean of pre-installed gunk before I pour Ubuntu into it.

I’ve been off in the Linux world for so long I’ve forgotten how bad it is for the normies. I’m not doubting you, but what is the showstopper? Is it just the installation process? Adobe suite and office? Or just force of habit?

most people don't know what booting from a thumbdrive is, what a partition or a distro is, they don't even know you can have something else than windows or apple (or maybe chromeOS) If you open a terminal in public they will burn you at the stake for wizardry

I've been buying computers from Linux-only shops for quite some time now. Most recently, I've been buying from System76. You get a little less hardware for your money, but they do an excellent job of stripping the proprietary software off of the CPU, etc.

There is so much enshittification which follows from "What are you gonna do? Not use our product? Too bad, there are no alternatives anymore, we ate them." Oddly, this is exactly what capitalism predicts, but as a society we did nothing to prevent it.

I see this is about Windows and being a normie, but willful ignorance about Linux, Ubuntu or Mint (however you've heard about it) is a bad look. Sticking your head in the sand and going "I don't want to consider it" seems lazy for someone trying to express big gripes. *nix has their own problems.

Only because we allowed it to happen You didn't *have to* create those accounts, for instance I didn't and haven't even though Microsoft harasses me constantly to do so I still haven't and won't But, yeah, what we have now is intolerable

Oh no, I remember going through all of that when I got my laptop. Shit sucked and then I got to learn that it was saving everything to onedrive when I got hit with "oopsie, you ran out of space! Please upgrade for more space!" clicky clacky and I disabled that sucker REAL fast.

It’s true, my elderly father can’t keep up with tech at all. I’m a tech proficient late Boomer, but we’ve adopted tech in my small family since the 80s, so, I keep up. It’s navigating a foreign country to most ppl my age or older.

I'm an early boomer, and when I taught tech to seniors, after I retired, I found that most were overwhelmed. I tried to keep it simple, and emphasized scepticism on the internets. In other words, be very cautious. Now, with everyone using phones, it's easier to get scammed. So many get taken in.

As a computer user since 1976, intro to Apple in 1987 changed my life. Truly delivered on its “1984” promise. But now—why does every update change the functionality of literally everything? The freaking iPhone calculator changed!!

Sorry if I offended you. What I read was that you were annoyed at long updates which to me suggests Windows as it is the very reason that I don't run that OS.

my parents (late 60s) renew their laptops every couple of years and they'd often tell me about their frustrations, especially about stuff not being as straightforward as it used to... because of bloatware. they just want to do some stuff on spreadsheets and basic web browsing. but nope!

#NCP I think this is why MacOS is continuing to gain marketshare these days with the MBA and Mac Minis. We Mac desktop users simply don't have to go through all this BS. I haven't used a MS Windows computer in a decade, and I'm not missing much, apparently.

I’ve run my work MBP without an Apple ID tied to it for over 2 years now no problems at all. My personal MBA is signed in because I actually use iCloud for it.

I’m trying to rescue data off a rapidly dying HD and reinstall Windows on a new one in neighbor’s computer while he’s on vacation. Without his MSFT/Hotmail/MSN account password, I can’t really SET UP anything for him until he gets back. Worst IT timeline continues.

I upgraded my machine for the first time in 6 years a while back, and that meant a clean install. Microsoft tried to upsell me seven times. If you buy the OS and don't get it OEM, you are paying $150 to get upsold repeatedly.

I went through this last week. And since it was a gaming laptop, setting up Windows was only the start. Manufacturer had its own updates, then the GPU had some, too. Oh, and one of the manufacturer updates broke functionality & additional updates had to be installed a few days later to fix that.

Most peopel don't even touch a Windows/Desktop computer anymore unless their work absolutely requires is. Those who are lucky only use iOs or Android phones for daily life. IT professionals use Linux, an IT professional with a Windows device is probably a scam.

Now, imagine being in your 70s or 80s and trying to navigate all that bullshit. Land lines are no longer available in my parent's area, so EVERYTHING has to be done by computer/smart phone. They're having vision and hearing issues. Tech is leaving a huge segment of our population isolated.

I use a lot of programs downloaded from GitHub and I'm still confused every time I look at one of those pages and have to figure out where the fuck to actually download the program/installation file.

It would still take a good vendor but I really think some kind of Ubuntu version (a better Zorin?) could become popular and sold to end-users as "just works, it's yours, it's secure, you choose to update or upgrade".

It will be a hard sell as long as Linux is perceived as hard to use. I had a back and forth with a dude who flat out refused to believe that Linux can be upgraded without breaking.

It would be nice to get more people using Linux. I wish more computer vendors offered it as an option. But it's important to remember that there's still quite a few crucial things that don't work, and that this matters to people.

Also, imo they should offer Linux Mint & Nobaru. Out-of-the-box options need to be as easy as possible for everyday users. This setup lets them advertise both a general purpose OS & a gaming-focused one. For all the gaming-focused PCs, adding the OS to the marketing seems like a no-brainer.

FWIW installing WSL2/ubuntu on modern windows machine is literally less painful than... finishing setting up onedrive (or removing it). let's just pray MSFT never ties it into their Windows Hello/OneDrive/teams identity Torment Nexus

I get that most of the world is Windows, as are most businesses. Ironically, most of the cloud is Linux based. Google, AWS, FB/Meta, Apple, and even Microsoft Azure are on Linux.

While not ideal, this doesn’t seem that bad to me? You can just hit next/skip. It should be done in under ten minutes except for updating ofc. Most bloatware is also easy to uninstall these days.

I had a similar experience trying to play PS5 offline with my nephew today -- couldnt use a guest account, had to make a new sony online account, and an activision account, which my email was already signed up for but i never got the pw reset so i used another email…

HP printer! My nemesis. With mine, I’ve successfully printed less than ten times since 2020. The others times left me with wonky print jobs, googling “why aren’t my new ink cartridges working in my HP printer” & falling down Reddit rabbit holes of trying to troubleshoot. I hope you have better luck🫡

Dude come on, don't tell us that without telling us the BRAND. There are laptop/PC companies that don't put you through that and you would do the public a better service by identifying those brands instead of pretending that your experience is universal.

The average consumer experience is more like [Go to best buy- buy the laptop the sales guy tells you to- buy the best buy total care or whatnot- geek squad sets it up for you- customer picks it up the next day]

The last Dell i bought was in 2017 & it survived till 2023, which I suppose isnt too bad in the scheme of things. But then I replaced it with a Macbook & Im not going back. It was so easy to set up & I dont have the patience for all the Windows nonsense anymore😭

Ooh yeah, Im sure a lot of schools still stick to PC. I still remember when we got the first PC in my elementary class in the 90s 😂 But the community college around here mostly uses Mac so when I went a while I was stuck in a bad way cause I didnt know how to use them lol 🥲

I want to chuck my MacBook off a cliff—I absolutely hate all of it. I’m an Apple person—2 iPhones, an iPad, an Apple Watch (also a huge waste because the battery won’t even last a day and I only use it as a pedometer) and the MacBook. I have had Apple products since they started business. Not good.

I sat down this afternoon to do some writing. The MacBook wouldn’t open any internet pages—the error message said there isn’t enough room. Except there is enough room. (?) It was fine a couple of days ago. Then they say “update the OS.” I had it set on “auto update,” but

there are two updates sitting there waiting to happen. One is a Sonoma OS update (the same OS) and one is for Sequoia (not the same OS). Launch either one and they just sit there and do nothing. Apple forums say they could take up to 3 HOURS to complete. WTAF?!?

Two hours of fiddling later I switch to the Windows laptop. I wanted to write what I wanted to write in MS Word anyway because as much as I hate MS I use it for work every day so my expectations are realistic. I also know where the files are saved—unlike the MacBook, which is a gargantuan mystery.

This is great topic to discuss! But remember, in the past the setup or installation was also difficult, maybe in technical way, but it wasn’t easy. Now we have constant policies and decisions, where you are introduced to options and features before you get to desktop
