I tried to figure out if anyone documented these lost workers. They died before NY State had a vital records law. They reported to contractors or subcontractors, so they were not on the state payroll. I found no surviving necrologies. 🗃️ #ErieCanal

26-10-1825 USA: After 8 years and over 1,000 dead, mostly Irish migrants, the Erie Canal is open, linking the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean.

Did find this looking for canal diggers, though. Scajaquada Creek once had a native wild rice plant. Black Rock Beacon, April 17, 1823, p.3 🗃️ #Buffalo #FoodHistory

But back to the dead workers, supposedly a lot of them died in the Montezuma Swamp. There were no railroads to ship their bodies home, no area newspapers to report on working conditions & deaths. So maybe they were buried on site? If so, there should be a marker for them.
