there are so many writers who suffer from this. You can actually do anything. There are no rules, the only thing that matters is how you execute it.

Also "modern fantasy is made by people who only learn from fantasy" is why people can't conceive of firearms in medieval fantasy settings, or imagine it has to be flintlock weapons, but also don't mind rapiers.

I actually considered this in my world. There's two reasons firearms are rare: 1. Magic is relatively easy to get access to - about 10% of the population has some kind of magical ability. Many of them don't realize it, or channel it in ways that aren't obvious.

2. "Technology" (guns, mostly, but also steam engines) was used by a historically horrible group, and their use of it makes it shunned. The forces of the god called "The Corruptor" used it because, for reasons no one understands right now, they couldn't use magic at all.

That being said, there are people who have studied this stuff, understand that it's not innately evil, and its use is growing. There's also people fusing magic and technology and doing some very scary things with it.

While there's talk of to-the-home water delivery instead of pumps from the cisterns, right now the amount of work and money would be ridiculous, so the water-pumping machines are just used to keep cisterns full, as examples of what it's being used for.

one, you need to get the proportions right. two, there's a cultural and a legal issue involved in the situation; it's not just "x doesn't work" - people associate it with one group, and there were laws against it as a result for a long time.

Rather than historicity specifically, I wish more fantasy settings would just get *weird* . Make a halberd that throws its blade like a boomerang or something. Make me feel like this is a strange unknown land.
