The Bundibugyo Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has passed a tragic milestone. Just 11 weeks after it was declared, the outbreak has reached 3,748 confirmed cases, making it the second-largest Ebola outbreak in history and the fastest-growing ever recorded.

It has now surpassed the total number of cases in the 2018 to 2020 Ebola Zaire epidemic in North Kivu-Ituri, which lasted 22 months.

There is still no approved vaccine or treatment for Bundibugyo virus. In such a challenging environment, we are deeply concerned that public health measures alone may not be enough to stop its spread.

Safe and effective vaccines could help curtail this epidemic, save lives, and strengthen protection against future Bundibugyo outbreaks. CEPI and our partners are making rapid progress: we are backing four vaccine candidates so far, with the first already in clinical trials.

In the meantime, health and frontline workers are risking their lives to deliver this response, communities remain unprotected, and cases and deaths rise at an alarming rate. And behind every number is a mother, a child, a friend, a colleague.

The international community must step up now with the resources and commitment this crisis urgently demands.
