The next pandemic could begin anywhere, at any moment. And the risk of a deadly outbreak is only rising. But it doesn’t have to be that way. CEPI 3.0 is our plan to move the world from reactive response to proactive protection.

Final preparations are underway for Tumaini, which means “hope” in Swahili. This pivotal Phase 2/3 clinical trial will evaluate the safety, immunogenicity and efficacy of vaccine candidates against Bundibugyo virus, including Ervebo which is currently licensed for use to prevent Ebola virus.

The trial will support the Government-led response to the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Subject to ethical and regulatory approval, it is expected to begin in the coming weeks. Read more about the trial here: cepi.net/final-prepar...

Pandemics are one of 17 catastrophic global threats to health and human survival this century, alongside nuclear conflict, climate change and obesity. But their impact can be reduced through collective action and investment in preparedness. (1/2)

As CEPI CEO Dr Hatchett said: “By backing CEPI 3.0, Ethiopia, Norway and the UK are showing the kind of foresight and leadership that global health security depends on. Their investments will strengthen the world's disease defences, helping us respond rapidly and equitably to emerging viral threats”

The commitments, announced during CEPI’s side event at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, will support CEPI 3.0, the Coalition's 2027–2031 strategy to systematically reduce the likelihood, impact and cost of epidemics and pandemics.

Good decisions in an outbreak depend on good evidence. That’s why CEPI is investing US$3.9 million in three research projects to strengthen understanding of the Bundibugyo ebolavirus (BDBV) outbreak in the DRC, helping guide the response and support clinical trials of BDBV vaccine candidates ⬇️

CEPI is investing US$4.17m in four research projects to help answer this pressing question. The projects will test whether existing Ebola vaccines, including Ervebo, can generate immune responses against Bundibugyo, the virus behind the outbreak in DRC. First results expected within months.

"Every day matters and every vaccine candidate in clinical trials gives us another shot at getting a safe, effective vaccine to the people who need it as swiftly as possible," said Dr Richard Hatchett, CEPI's CEO.

The trial, across three Canadian sites, will enrol ~80 volunteers to assess safety and immune response. It's one of four candidates CEPI is funding in parallel, alongside two rVSV-based vaccines and a University of Oxford candidate already in Phase 1.

The numbers are stark: more than 3,800 people infected, over 1,700 lives lost. This is already the second-largest Ebola outbreak in history and the fastest-growing on record. There is no approved vaccine against Bundibugyo virus.
