The numbers are stark: more than 3,800 people infected, over 1,700 lives lost. This is already the second-largest Ebola outbreak in history and the fastest-growing on record. There is no approved vaccine against Bundibugyo virus.

"Every day matters and every vaccine candidate in clinical trials gives us another shot at getting a safe, effective vaccine to the people who need it as swiftly as possible," said Dr Richard Hatchett, CEPI's CEO.

The trial, across three Canadian sites, will enrol ~80 volunteers to assess safety and immune response. It's one of four candidates CEPI is funding in parallel, alongside two rVSV-based vaccines and a University of Oxford candidate already in Phase 1.

CEPI has committed up to US$50 million to advance Moderna’s vaccine candidate from preclinical testing through Phase 1 trials and scaled manufacturing of additional clinical trial doses so larger efficacy studies can launch rapidly if results are promising.
