🧵 (1/9) Big changes might be coming to the Supreme Court. Senators Welch (D-VT) & Manchin (I-WV) are pushing a constitutional amendment for 18-year term limits for justices. Bold move? Yes. But do Americans actually support this? Let’s look at the data. 👇

(2/9) According to a July 2024 survey, 68% of Americans support term limits for Supreme Court justices. This includes: 90% of Democrats 59% of independents 48% of Republicans Yes, term limits have bipartisan backing. A rare moment of unity, folks. 🙌

This really isn’t that rare. A lot of us all want the same things but many lack education as to how to achieve them. Plus lack of class solidarity but that seems to be changing.

(3/9) Why the support? Public trust in the Supreme Court is in the gutter. Only 14% of Americans strongly approve of the Court’s performance. Meanwhile, 38% strongly disapprove. For Democrats, it’s even worse—71% strongly disapprove. Yikes. 📉

(5/9) What would term limits actually do? The proposal ensures regular, predictable appointments. Every president would get 2 nominations per term. This reduces the stakes of vacancies and prevents justices from sitting on the bench for 30+ years. 👩‍⚖️

(6/9) But it’s not just term limits Americans want. 77% of respondents support enforceable ethics rules for justices. 96% of Democrats 61% of Republicans Yes, even Republicans want some accountability. Recent ethics scandals have only added fuel to the fire. 🔥
