I genuinely do not understand how people like Kingdom Hearts. I’ve tried to play the first game at least 3 times and I just do not get the appeal at all.

It's a thing you appreciate more as a kid I think. I haven't played it but I want to because the idea of "disney but there's anime shit" is my kind of thing since it sounds really funny and cool. Also the music rocks.

The music does bang but the anime stuff just feels very superficial. The final fantasy characters are just kinda… there. (Aerith is just kinda alive?) If the game had a chapter about becoming eco-terrorists by taking down a Mako reactor with Goofy I would be considering GOAT status.

And from what I’ve played the Disney stuff is underutilized too. There’s many “worlds” from Disney movies but you don’t get to do stuff like have Aladdin interact with Hercules or anything like that it’s all disconnected from each other which makes the crossover aspect pretty boring too.

That's what I've heard/seen yeah. The game assumes you're a BIG disney fan that enjoys the concept of exploring and interacting (kind of but not really) with classic disney movies and characters. And tbf, i'm not the biggest disney fan so it's not like I defend how they handle that aspect yeah.

The dialogue is horribly stilted, the combat is clunky and floaty. I don’t even have the normal complaint of “ohhh it’s just SOOO complicated” it’s just not that interesting story wise. I like esoteric bullshit.

This is because KH1 is a clunky, floaty game made when they didn't really realize they were going to make a complex web of stories and terms and not a simple FF/Disney crossover (that's mostly Disney) where you're beating up the sad darkness with your happy light

Like I wouldn't call myself a FAN of Kingdom Hearts but I know just enough to know that it's aged like milk and did not find its footing until...well, until Chain of Memories, where they were like 'oh so we can do whatever we want', but KH2 is Actually A Good Game Promise

Yeah the dialog kinda sucks forever. Child actor with bad direction + dubisms does not for a good listen make. Then they never really graduate beyond dubisms and when a Disney character is done well it just feels More Jarring. I wonder if you'd like it better muted tbh

The combat probably feels bad because to give the Literally One Button Menu Attack System more depth there's Almost No Buffer, so to attack quickly you have to time each button press perfectly. I don't actually know much about the story beyond 1 tbh, but presumably it does get Esoteric? Idk.

But yeah the "why people enjoy it" question could probably be best answered by Chuggaa's LP of it. Just go watch a like 20 hour playthrough to understand why people like anime children game for baby's and lame adults. Of course

From the beginning you get the impression this is like a neverland island situation where they’re all kids and then suddenly there’s a cutscene with Sora in his house with his parents there and they’re just genuinely never mentioned again??

The furthest I’ve gotten is the Aladdin world where Homer Simpson shows up as the Genie and I was like “okay I’m genuinely just not having any fun” and stopped. I have had people I know IN REAL LIFE say to me “nahh man kingdom hearts TWO is where it gets good” and like bro come on now.

I don’t mean this as like a hate post if you like kingdom hearts I just genuinely don’t understand it. I’ve been able to play games before for a few hours without finishing it and go away from it like “oh yeah I can see why people like this” but I cannot do that here and I don’t get it at all lol
