I've said this before but the most trouble I ever got in at school was when i left a notebook full of doodles in the classroom of my uptight math teacher. They called my mom because I drew a goth girl with no pupils wearing a "TEIN" shirt, wanting an explanation of whether that was a gang symbol

So the "advice" doled out in this column makes me INCREDIBLY fucking angry as a former kid who was repeatedly taken to task by teachers for "inappropriate" drawings, culminating in a 9th-grade suspension spurred by Columbine paranoia and residual Satanic Panic. Arionne here says that was JUSTIFIED.

In middle school I drew a series of comics about one of my classes, like 5 full page issues. They got passed around and were popular with my peers. My English teacher took notice, confiscated them all, and threw them in the trash. A friend of mine was able to sneakily recover some of them.

I almost got in trouble for showing up to class with the water bottle they gave us at orientation filled with orange juice from the cafeteria Teacher thought it was a screwdriver (it was a zero tolerance dry campus) When I said it was orange juice they gave me the riiiight response but class started

I had a student who drew a perfect slurpie cup on the desk in detention. The teacher asked me what she should do. Told her I'd take care of it. Had him promise not to draw on desks. Then I paid him (with mom's approval) to illustrate a children's book I wrote.

when I was in second grade I was called into an after school meeting for using the word "fuck" on an assignment. On the ride home my mom asked me how I came to know the correct spelling

I got in trouble in fifth grade for doodling a pretty goofy devil face (like imagine a fifth grader drawing the Sickos guy, that kind of goofy) on a graded assignment. I remember reading my teacher's unspoken language as "I know I'm supposed to tell you not to do this, but I can't really say why"

In elementary school there was also a brief fad for drawing "death traps" where little stick figures would be falling on spikes, being burned by lava, etc. (basically anything that might happen to you in a Mario game) and our teacher had to tell the class that drawing them was banned
