This is why I encourage other comics people to really look at the deadline they've been assigned and if it's even feasible. And not "it will kill me, but I can do it" feasible, either. Sometimes deadlines are arbitrary and can be adjusted! Especially early in the process! Ask for what you need!

NEW: I spoke with current and former EA employees to understand how the latest layoff round played out and the realities of daily life at the U.S. publisher. The short version? EA is controlled by an executive class that "cannot fail, only be failed." Workers, then, will always pay the price.

I do get unsolicited assignments occasionally—thank you, Artsy; gratzi, @bradfordpearson.bsky.social—but half of my day is spent pitching, sending LOIs, or reaching out to editors to remind them that I am, in fact, very much alive. I've learned to accept that this is how it is.

i'll tell ya one thing i miss is FREELANCE ASSIGNMENTS. i have never been a good pitch-er but i can pretty much write whatever someone tells me to and i used to have a stable of editors who liked hurling ideas at me and seeing what i came up with. the salad days of $300 assignments from MEL lol

Congrats to Lula on overcoming Mark Zuckerberg and Donald Trump to defeat Hospital Pervert Jr., even as his opposition literally blocked off roads and turned off bus service during election day. Fascists are scary but they are always, 100% of the time, ultimately gigantic fucking losers.

Thirty years ago I was on a high-volume high-aggro mailing list, and when someone lost it like this the tradition was for someone to take the text of the message, alphabetize it, paste it into a reply, and say “these words didn’t appear to be in any particular order so I alphabetized them for you”

…with a much higher blitz rate, and also some more exotic stuff (the cardinals got goff on the first dropback of the game with a really slick budda baker blitz). and as much as adding mays should help, it’s also *another* personnel change. but the lions have been adjusting, & they’ve had a bye, so

ford field doesn’t like the no-call on that downfield contact but abney just got away with one like that on the possession before. they’re lettin’ ‘em play, both ways
