Last year, as a fun side project, I began disassembling and documenting #Faxanadu for #NES. I love this game. Wanted to know how it works internally. And it's fascinating. 3 built-in scripting languages, level select code, signs of an older game. chipx86.com/faxanadu/ #retro #gamedev #projects

Nintendo was so impressed with that game they gave it the marketing of a 1st party published game that only other developers could dream about. Hudson must have loved that. The mist stages were pretty neat as far a graphical effects went. I'm no expert, but some sort of animated tiles I guess?

It was sooo good! Yeah, the way it works is that they have a block of mist tiles loaded into the PPU, which are drawn as both background and foreground tiles. Then at different intervals, they rotate a column of pixels around to the right by 1px each. And that creates the most look.

From that work, someone built an editor, and from that, new Faxanadu games are now being built (see bsky.app/profile/okim...). This has been like working on a complex, but very satisfying, puzzle book.

The engine's well-designed, but I can tell it was rushed at the end. But it offers a lot. Bytecode scripts dictating enemy behavior. Scripts dictating interactions with NPCs and items. An advanced music engine. And things left out of the game. Including additional special effects for magic.
