Each #October, I haunt the towns with a small army of little ghosts as part of the Great Global Ghost Hunt. The idea is to bring some joy and whimsy to the world in the form of #ghosts one can hide for others to find. I created these little ones a few years back. Working on new batches.

I have 6 ghosts, currently: One hiding in a pumpkin saying "Boo". Alady with a purple hat and purple purse, her boo with a blue top hat and bowtie. A mummy all wrapped up snug. A yellow ghosts hovering over candles (aka "popsicle ghost"). A happy little purple reaper (hi @quwebs.bsky.social)

Production pics from last year.Production process, with some ghosts and cards waiting to be cut, and some cut ready to be laminated.

Release day! 💜 RBTools 7.0 for Review Board brings some shine to the command line UI, making it much more pleasant to use. Plus Testing/Bugs extraction from commit messages, #Jujutsu and #ClearCase improvements, and more. Plus lots of bug fixes. www.reviewboard.org/news/2026/10...

Agentic development should always be optional, but for those who use it, we're building something really cool at Review Board that adheres to our People-First approach. I'll have more to share on the @reviewboard.org account and at www.reviewboard.org in the coming months.

I find it interesting what network most engages with what post. Tech/dev-focused posts go over really well on Mastodon, but not BlueSky (more gaming/artistic posts here). COVID reports get *tons* of engagement on Facebook, less elsewhere. X is a mixed bag. Still quite active.. *sigh*

I'll probably be back to writing these a couple times a week again.

🟣 Friday, August 28, 2026 #COVID report for Butte County, CA ▶︎ Chico: 🟣 Very High ▶︎ Oroville: 🟣 Very High Graphs: bc19.live Chico and Oroville are now both firmly in Very High territory, according to wastewater data. We're seeing the same patterns we've seen during past surges in both areas.

I'm excited by what we're building. We're committed to on-prem, privacy, data portability, humans as the focus (even with AI in the mix). It's not really the industry trend, but it's ours. Especially at a time when #Canada and the #EU are needing solutions under their control.

There are futures to code/project review that are being ignored. And legacy customers with nowhere to go. For @reviewboard.org, we're building #EDA Design Review, #AI that strengthens human teams, and a migration path for #Crucible users needing a new home. chipx86.blog/2026/08/24/c...

I was happy to see #COVID at such low levels for my home county all year, but it's surging again. So I'm writing reports and managing the data again. Year 6. Time is a funny thing.

Early in my career, a co-worker shared an important piece of wisdom: Know what not to write, know what not to commit. Not every function, interface, or line of code written during development needs to be part of the final change. chipx86.blog/2026/08/20/k... #blog #programming #development

Been thinking about this brave new world of AI development, what we gain, what we give up... at the end of the day, I keep coming back to one thing: AIs don't take showers. chipx86.blog/2026/07/26/a... #ai #blog #coding #development

Lore.org's gotten a lot of attention this week. A newly-released open source version control system from Epic Games. Light-weight branching, binary assets, and more. We're looking into adding code review support for Lore in @reviewboard.org. Starting a deep dive into the internals.

I haven't had to write a #COVID report in ages. This has been great. I want this to continue for our community as long as possible (due to lack of serious transmission, and NOT lack of data).

I love deranged software projects. I like seeing how far you can push things, finding ways to make languages/frameworks do what they shouldn't, or just building something that nobody would have any good reason to build.

Two weeks ago, we launched our Plus/Enterprise tiers with premium features and support. We gave this project a working title of Tiers of the Kingdom, since we started working on it around the time that Tears of the Kingdom released (being a #Zelda nerd is a requirement for working at Beanbag).

Very excited about the #Nintendo Direct tomorrow, where they'll no doubt unveil Dr. #Mario Wonder, Excite Bike Galaxy, the dual #Zelda 1/2 remake release, and the collection of 40th anniversary NES Zelda Amiibo.

I hate to say, my first experience with Mina the Hollower is a bad one. I haven't played the game yet, and I'm sure that's great, but the controller options need a rethink. You can customize the buttons for attack, jump, etc., but when you do that, you also change the Confirm/Cancel. Disorienting.

Re-reading what I wrote, I should clarify why the Confirm/Cancel is affected. By default, A=Jump, B=Heal, Y=Sidearm, X=Attack. Confirm/Cancel is A/B (you can swap this). I'd prefer B=Jump, Y=Attack, X=Heal, A=Sidearm. If I do this, Confirm/Cancel becomes B/X. It inherits from the action mapping.

Part of this is that I'm on the AYN Thor, so it's probably just not the device it expects to be on: X Y A B Might have been better to break out the Steam Deck for this. That said, separate mappings for Confirm/Cancel would do wonders, and Disable Controller should require confirmation.

Changing Confirm/Cancel makes it really tricky to get through the UI and undo it. Worse, the "Controller" menu item, when interacted with, disables your controller. On my device, that proved a serious problem. Undid it and then accidentally triggered it again... Hope this sees an update.

The "Controller" menu item lets you toggle whether the controller is Enabled or Disabled. It's not really clear initially what that's for (easy to think you'll edit controller settings), and I think the thought is you have a keyboard to undo it. But on a handheld gaming console, that's not a given.

And we want to continue to emphasize our people-first approach. #AI can be helpful, but people should be in the driver's seat, and we're building for them first and foremost. I'll die on this hill.

If you care about source code sovereignty, privacy, on-prem, code quality, and not having AI train on your code, I hope you'll give Review Board a try. We've been around for 20 years, pre-#GitHub, and have a lot we want to do in the future.

Trying to keep a healthy mix of review features (the whole point of the product) and admin/integration features. As the world re-evaluates what tools are being used for code and development, we'll continue to add to our large list of SCM, forge, and other devtool integrations.
