Oh no my whole thread vanished Set in a colonial-era maritime SEA inspired region (not 1:1 with anywhere irl), Marjan's father is a sibling of the late Sultan, who's trying to keep his house alive by making deals with the colonial rulers rather than resisting (which is how the Sultan died)

One of the things he trades with the colonialists is servants, which often come from their other colonies. He believes they'll find a peaceful resolution and is training Marjan to take over from him. And they're too meek to refuse this may as well be a full project at this point 😭

When I'm drawing art with backgrounds, I sort of can't help worldbuilding in my head. Especially if the project has hardly anything to go off of. Every bit of the background is informed by the location's history and ecology...

Backgrounds are quiet causality: wear marks imply labor, plant choices imply climate, and architecture stores past conflicts. Without exposition, a location can disclose what happened to its people.
