We want to share some progress on our game Crash Into You, as we've made a bit of progress on the project lately. The basic idea: a sapphic romance visual novel, but your dialog decisions are made by sampling from a wheel of base emotions and expressing how your avatar feels about the situation.

Initially, the wheel is mostly greyed out, but a few emotions are highlighted in color. You can click on the symbols with a mouse or pick them with a gamepad.

Once the initial choice is made, you are locked into a few options that are related to the chosen base emotion. We see two versions of this in the screenshots.

We want to playtest this soon with an actual scene and some proper dialog to see how that UI works out in practice. Our recent work on this has been pretty technical, as we cycled through virtually all the VN engines available for Godot. #godot

Dialogic did not work as our customization needs were too complex to deal with in the engine. Rakugo seemed like a better choice, but we eventually realized that it is not well documented and apparently unmaintained.

We are now reimplementing the interface using Dialogue Manager, see github.com/nathanhoad/g... This is more a dialog tool than a visual novel engine, but hopefully this will make it much easier to customize and well maintained.

In other news, we are currently talking to a few visual artists to find a partner to turn this project from a greyboxed prototype to a fully fleshed out game. We intend to post updates more frequently, so follow us to stay up to date! #indiegames
