TIL that if you plug a DualShock 4 controller into a Windows 98 machine, it just magically works and has analog support.

This is the magic of standardized HID device! Doesn’t matter what you are or when you are from. The way you work is always the same since day one. The books was quite difficult to read and understand tho, just like and ancient inscription😂

lol the ps5 controller probs also "just works" bsky.app/profile/mobc... ive maped its hid reports to an xbox controller here, but yeah via usb it just dumps out raw data ready for you to use... just bluetooth is a pain in the arse....

Its the little things...

This is because: Win98 was legitimately fuggen awesome. WinXP was a window to a future we should have rejected. Bloated, over-complex, user-hostile OS's that only got progressively worse IMHO.

I plugged in a USB capture card into my windows 2000 laptop and it just worked without any special software. I guess I underestimated how good these old operating systems were.

What's the name of the Xbox 360 driver? I have a couple 3rd party Xbox one controllers if you hold down start and back while plugging them in they'll work on win98 too!

It also supports the Raphnet SNES-to-USB adapter. This was my original goal, and you can use Xpadder 5.6 (last W98 build?) to map it to keyboard controls. But if it's a two port adapter, it's a 50/50 shot which port it decides to latch on to.

And lastly, someone made a very fancy driver for Xbox 360 controllers! It has its own configurator and supports force feedback (rumble) and analog.

I think that's because Win98 was before Microsoft tried to "help" "make a standard for controllers" by slopping their xinput (which sucks for everything but xbox controllers) over their system.
