Why are pocket staffs even a thing?

It's meant to be a magic trick, but it broke containment.

Ooh! I actually have this one! And yeah, they're not safe at all. The metal is thin spring steel, with sharp edges. The pin that holds it is designed to release quickly - notice the spring on there. You can release it by just squeezing the apparatus gently, or with a bit of thread to the eyelet.
