I know someone who just got hit while biking and thank God they had put a helmet on. It did save their life.

The independent "Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute" says no, they don't go bad just from old age alone. See helmets.org/replace/ But wear-and-tear can diminish them over time (fit-pads inside get crushed, minor drop damage adds up). My approach: when it looks old and ratty, or 10 years (or crash).
