If you are in the path of Hurricane Isaias and will use a portable generator to keep the power on, make sure you have working carbon monoxide alarms. Portable generators can produce enough carbon monoxide to kill in minutes.

Isaias is expected to strengthen and be a strong hurricane when it approaches the northern Gulf Coast on Friday. A life-threatening storm surge is expected along a portion of the northern Gulf Coast, and a Storm Surge Warning is now in effect. Residents should follow advice given by local officials.

Tragically, we see incidents where people survive major storms but are killed by carbon monoxide from portable generators. Never run your generator indoors. Run generators outdoors at least 20ft away from your home.

If the surge is 7 feet at the beach, does the full height of the surge also go up into the bayous and back reaches of all the bays?

Surge should decrease as it goes inland because of geography so I'd say no, but there is still a lot of risk in those areas because of existing flooding concerns.
