Shame on #ubuntu for ramming Linux 7 kernel down our throats on older versions breaking everything.

no ubuntu user here so I just heard from this by your post. After looking stuff up like wth Canonical took a big L there. Any chance for you to roll back to 6.17?

Yah man, thanks! Really frustrating, they pushed the 7 kernel to Ubuntu 24.04 systems, which broke their own package maintained version of Virtual Box, which many of us rely on. I was able to boot into 6.8 and then block apt from upgrading to the 7 kernel. Was an annoying waste of an hour though.

Virtual Box just needs an update to the latest version, it is the same also on Mint which is based on Ubuntu 24.04. As a rule, new VB versions are released when new kernels are available.

BTW, better use the VB from their web site, it is more up to date.

That’s the whole point of using the package maintainers version though, they “should” ensure that the one they supply plays nicely with the other software like the kernel and dependencies. Installing manually puts you in the position to have to maintain it.

Canonical/Ubuntu does a lot but it is not very realistic expect they can verify all possible dependencies between thousands packages without fail especially for non-FOSS packages. I don't mind being a little bit more in control and use SW as released, especially if my work depends on it.
