The USA will not tolerate Chinese-owned apps spying on you! Only good ol’ American companies get to do that (because there are no meaningful data-privacy laws (because the same lawmakers who voted for this are totally fine if it’s Facebook and Google doing the spying)).

A federal appeals court confirmed that TikTok has until January 19 to be sold to a US company or be banned nationwide. n.pr/4g0vKzN

I have no love for TikTok, but the blatant xenophobic double-standard at work here is kinda impressive. ByteDance isn’t accused of doing a single thing that US-based companies haven’t been repeatedly caught doing for years. But they’re *foreign*, which is the unspoken exception, it seems.

Preface foreign with adversarial, and you'd be a lot closer. I support more regulations for personal data across the industry, but starting with the CCP isn't gonna make me cry foul. I will continue to advocate for broader user protections across all platforms & industries.

Iit benefits them to do? If it's used everywhere, it's more useful to them. Look, the US government sucks. The Chinese government has cameras with facial recognition everywhere they can, so anyone seen doing something "socially unacceptable" can be IDed, shamed, and penalized. Their govt's worse.

As bad as things are in the US, the Chinese legal system is worse. Just look to Hong Kong, where mild criticism of China can get you thrown in jail. We can talk about our out-of-control police, they can't. We can talk about the trail of tears, they can't say Tienanmen Square.
